Gov. Rick Perry announced on Monday his intent to deploy up to 1,000 members of the Texas National Guard to the Rio Grande Valley to help the state's Department of Public Safety.
The buildup of troops is expected to take 30 days, officials said during an afternoon news conference.
"I will not stand idly by," Perry said in announcing the use of his executive authority to call up the guard. Perry decried the federal government for failing to secure the national borders and called the operation a "force multiplier" in support of the DPS.
He dubbed the deployment "Operation Strong Safety."
There's a video and more of the conference in the source:

Gotta shoot them brown folk.
This isn't the first time this has happened, mind you:
President George W. Bush sent 6,000 National Guard troops to the border in 2006, and Obama eventually extended that deployment while ordering a second wave of National Guard forces to Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico in 2010. But the second round saw reduced numbers of troops, and most of their work was limited to air patrols in counterdrug operations.
This has literally nothing to do with shooting people and everything to do with having more personnel at the border to both patrol and help with the logistical concerns that come with thousands of destitute families.

You two are really ill-informed on the situation aren't you? Border Patrol officers have been fired upon, they are not receiving proper firearms training and practice, and they have ammunition shortages. They really need this extra support.

nat guard pogs arent much better than active border patrol agents
Huh. Never thought Rick Perry would do something sensible in his life. Good on him, I guess.

Did you mean: "Lets use the National Guard to provide for state security and homeland defense"? Yeah, you did.

Cannot agree more. The current situation at the border is pretty pathetic at best. At the very least we should be putting grunt units on standby.

You do realize that more people patrolling the border means more people to spot those travelling across deserts, possibly without food and water on the brink of death?
This is going to save lives, not end them.

Not to mention it'll also prevent Border Patrol agents from getting killed, and hopefully deter ranchers from hiring local Oathkeepers/Watchmen militias.
