• Global Warming - a More Imminent Threat than Asteroid Impact, or Scaremongering and a Hoax?

How long have you been on this planet? Try to think about the environment when you were born; do you think it has changed at all, and if so for better or for worse? Either way, there is evidence that human activity is contributing towards the greenhouse effect on our planet [1][2]. This contribution is causing runaway global warming based on a feedback loop of greenhouse effect causes [3][4]. The point I wish to make is that the people in positions of power of mankind seem to be more concerned with the deflection of potentially dangerous near-earth objects (NEOs)(asteroids) such as Aphophis in 2029, as addressed by astrophysicist Niel DeGrasse Tyson [5][6]. Meanwhile, we have the 2009 Copenhagen UN Climate Change Conference failing [7][8] to come up with an agreement upon how to prevent catastrophic levels of global warming [7][9] that will be irreversible by 2020 [10]. To put this into perspective, then let us note how much NASA accomplishes with their budget of around half a penny per tax dollar [11]. And yet, the corporations that run on greed, consumer ignorance, and short-term profits, have little or nothing to show from the last 20 years [12] for the amount of money they acquire. Understand that I am not denying the importance of the prevention of collisions with NEOs, I am simply suggesting that the preservation of our environment be given perhaps equal priority to that of deflecting asteroids. What use is preventing a 1/1,000,000 chance collision when the destruction of Earths' ecosystem is a certainty if action is not taken? Edit: Also, I know we won't be seeing the effects until later into the 21st century. I'll find a reference to support that soon.
This looks like a wiki article. Make it look a little tidier by hyperlinking those numbers and I'll put the effort to read. [editline]2nd February 2014[/editline] Instead of... If you mean in the writing style, I understand that, it's just how I write stuff.
With the hyperlinks, you can cut out everything below 'References' for simplicity. [editline]2nd February 2014[/editline] This is something you should do in future cases. Now... [editline]2nd February 2014[/editline] You missed [7] If the ecosystem dies, all life goes with it but the planet will not die. It'll flourish again in a few million years and our predecessors will have a chance to not fuck up like we did. They'll find our ruins and figure us out. We're not too deep to get out of the hole but I'm confident that we will not get out in time.
Global Warming... ...More like global cooling.
It is no longer global warming, it is just extreme climates getting worse, and there is no debate about the reality. There was a recently exposed 'billion dollar think-tank' that was clearly one of the sources of this misinformation expedition. I think that climate change is a thing, but the way we are going about it is all wrong. Specifically Geo-engineering. Video explaining it better with a comedic twist.
Overpopulation is worse than global warming. I get pissed off whenever I see someone with a baby. We have enough fucking people on this shit planet, adopt some fuckin orphans and stop making babies! We need another Hitler... (User was banned for this post ("Advocating genocide" - Craptasket))

We have enough fucking people on this shit planet, adopt some fuckin orphans and stop making babies! We need another Hitler...
Overpopulation is a myth. The reason why 7 billion humans seems like making the planet overpopulate is because of poor land and resource management. If Mankind can manage human settlement and evenly distribute wealth and resource, 8 billion humans on Earth would not be a problem. Global warming or CLIMATE CHANGE as we now like to call is the direct result of poor resource management and conservation. We cannot stop pollutiing the Earth but we can jolly well try to reduce our pollution to the level that it is insignificant. We should moderately use our resources. Not overuse it and reduce wastage of energy. For every single tree we cut down, we should plant 5 more. Limit the number of fishes people catch per week. Invest on alternate energy sources other than coal and oil. It's not too late to save endangered animals like Pandas and Elephants but we can try to bring such animals and raise them in a sanctuary away from poachers.

We can easily continue our current way of living if we were to reduce the human population to 1 billion or less, because then nature is able to deal with our pollution. Some things do still need to be changed, such as the rate at which we deposit non-decomposable plastics into nature since there's no way these can break down. But if global CO2 emissions was to suddenly to drop by a factor of 7 and we restored much of the forests that were originally located on places that now host cities and agriculture, then all those plants may be able to recycle our emitted CO2 back into the ground at a good enough rate.

Wowe that has to be the most insane thing I've read this year so far. And yeah like BCell stated overpopulation is a myth. That said though, please never do reproduce or adopt anyone so that you don't fill their head with your sociopathic ideas. And please cool it with the pessimism, our species has its fair share of issues sure, but this is far from a shit planet.
Unlike Asteroids which can surprise appear, people can prepare for climate change and rising seas by moving important infrastructure to less vulnerable areas. Scientists say that the sea will completely rise in a few thousand years, so there is plenty of time to prepare.
I dont believe in global warming. If a fucking rothschild prince is promoting the global warming cult and Al Gore then you know its a scam.
Global warming or CLIMATE CHANGE as we now like to call...
Climate change refers to the change in the global climate over time. Global warming and global cooling are climate change phenomena. The terms are not interchangeable. [editline]16th February 2014[/editline] Specifically, global warming refers to a trend of increasing average temperature in the system. Cooling is the opposite. The real kicker about climate science is that it takes decades to get enough data to make accurate conclusions, and we live in a world that expects results instantly. Right now however, every point of data we have suggests we are currently in a warming trend. [editline]16th February 2014[/editline]
I dont believe in global warming. If a fucking rothschild prince is promoting the global warming cult and Al Gore then you know its a scam.
You should listen to the scientists and not Al Gore. [editline]16th February 2014[/editline] Another great irony in climate science is it sometimes feels counter intuitive. Like how warming of the Arctic is a major contributor to the extreme colds we're experiencing in the US, which is causing a lot of people to second guess the real science of whats going on. "So much for global warming!" when warming is exactly the reason why it's cold.
completely real and probably the greatest threat to humanity in the 21st century as nuclear war was to the 20th century. right now we're in a time comparable to the mid 1960s, we can see the promise of more and more global cooporation to reduce the carbon problem on the horizon but we aren't quite there. china for once after a year of record breaking and scale breaking smog-storms has finally gotten the message also since like 80% of their infastructure and population is on the coast in the worst region to be affected they are actually now involved in the discussion over the spiritual successor of the kyoto treaty. the kyoto treaty was the start of the solution but it will take decades of discussions and treaties before we can get into real action. hopefully the problem will be fixed before the worst possible outcome comes to bare. geoengineering is something that will take decades of research and international cooporation before we can actively reverse the effects of industry. also we never really know what the total amount of rebound the earth is capable of, we see corals in some areas dying out due to acidification but then we find in other areas massive reefs growing up with corals that thrive on the acidic ocean
Honestly, I don't think this is the biggest of humanity's problems. Things like the depletion of Earth's resources and overpopulation are far more important in my opinion. I'm NOT saying we need another Hitler, no, we just need laws that stop people from having ten kids. I mean, here in Bulgaria 90% of the roma people, also called gypsies, have at least three kids when they are 17. That's a huge fucking problem. I mean, everyone think Bulgaria is sooooo poor, because of THESE people. Most of them don't work, they just reproduce and live off the government. If you look at any Bulgarian beggar, you will notice he is one of the roma people. The normal citizens here have one or two kids, max. They work and pay their taxes, they don't reproduce like crazy. And the stupid thing is, if you tell a gypsy to work, he will just say "I'm fine not working, you keep working, scrub". Anyway, back on topic, I don't think you will think much about the weather if you don't have enough fuel to drive your car. Or enough metal to build the car. I just don't think global warming is such a big problem right now.
Overpopulation.
