This is a general thread for those who have an interest in languages as a whole, as opposed to a single language thread, which can often fade into nothingness. Here you can find good online resources for learning various languages, advice (should you ask) and a place to practice your language with others (or just share what you know). Some General Language facts: -The (this is debatable, and numerous sources will say differently) first written account of language found was in Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, dating from 2690BC, found in the tomb of Seth-Peribsen (2nd Dynasty). -There are approximately 7000 languages that are still spoken around the world today. Though, I'm not sure if these include Klingon or Elven. -At least half of the world’s population are bilingual or plurilingual, i.e. they speak two or more languages. -One language dies about every 14 days -There are 13 ways to spell the ‘o’ sound in French. -Esperanto is an artificial language, but is spoken by about 500,000 to 2,000,000 people, and 2 feature films have been done in the language. -The bible is available in 2454 languages. -The United States has no official language. Awesome, I was planning on remaking my old thread one of these days, since it sort of died. I'd recommend throwing in links to fluent in 3 months, the 4chan int wiki, and the how to learn any language website. Fi3m has some nice inspiration, and the other two have some good bios and information
Ah christ now I'm considering picking up Irish again. Spent 6 years in an Irish school, only allowed to speak English during English class. Kinda made me hate Irish a little, but being one of the (relatively) few people in the country who can say more than "conas atá tú?" is pretty cool. 'Course my spelling's always been terrible, keep forgetting to use fadas.

I'm curious, does anyone here often use skype to do language exchanges? I haven't, but I'd like to. If you have, how was it, and any tips?
Hello! Hola¡ Hallo! Bonjour! Salve! おはようございます!
How come all of them say "hello" or "good day" except for the Japanese one which says "good morning"? Seems oddly divergent.

สวัสดีครับทุกคน! Hi, everyone!
Thinking of learning Japanese-- anyone know the best program for it?
Thinking of learning Japanese-- anyone know the best program for it?
the daily japanese thread in /a/ is a great place to start, just head over to http://boards.4chan.org/a/catalog and ctrl-f "DJT". I'm pretty sure most people who get into japanese don't use programs like duolingo, but textbooks (it's usually the recommendation to use genki).

Eh. At least English makes up for that by having other areas being quite easy. Additionally a lot of people don't care about those kind of mistakes, which is nice. I've never heard someone correct somebody for saying radiuses in the geometry class I used to be in for example, you'd sound like quite a pedantic cunt if you did so. Also the thing about words like know and knight having silent Ks, they used to not be, so if you really want to you can go ahead and say it. Even in today's German (which ofc, split from the same language English split from) you still pronounce the Ks as they never made them silent.

I was the guy that contributed "But if Radius is Radii, is Penis Peni/ii?"
Thinking of learning Japanese-- anyone know the best program for it?
日本語は難しいよ! Get the Genki textbook. Rosetta Stone is crap.
Also get the workbook accompaniment. I find it's helped me massively having the workbook to practice what I've learned.
I've been using http://lang-8.com/ for a few days and plan on testing my grammar using it. You correct journal entries in your native language while posting in the language you're studying. So far I've just been correcting English journals, spooked some Japanese college student will rip me a new asshole if I posted my own. I'm also using Wanikani which seems really well put together but people have different opinions about it.
Do you guys reckon I start up a JVlog for when I move to Japan for a year, like people seem to do. I'm a little dubious, as I have some confidence issues but I think in a new country I can sort of reinvent myself and go for it...
I'm taking a spanish class in the fall

Additionally it could help as somewhat of a motivator (That is if you aren't fluent by the time you're there)

Awesome, I've wanted a thread like this. 大家好,我學習漢語才四個月。漢語很有意思的語言。 我的漢語可怕。 [editline]8th June 2015[/editline] Oh cypher, You probably already know this but if you do decide to learn Mandarin a lot of kanji have a similar if not identical meaning with their equivalent Chinese character. 日本文有相似的背景

Tree?
Tree?
Yep. Or 森 (Forest)
Yeah, that's a very common radical. Pronounced as mu4 in Mandarin.
日本語の学生です。 50% of people are bilingual? That's way more than I expected.
