• New Xbox Live ToS changes wants your most current contact info 'for safety'
Microsoft announced it will roll out a new Xbox Live terms of use this week, which will require users to "commit to keeping their contact information up to date." Those that accept the new terms of use will also allow Microsoft to share personal information "such as your name, address, email address and date of birth" with services that users link accounts with on Xbox Live such as Netflix, Hulu and ESPN. The current terms of use uses similar language in describing how Microsoft already shares private information: "If you choose to link your Services account with the account of a Microsoft party on the Xbox LIVE service (for example, a game publisher or app provider), you agree that Microsoft may share limited account information with that Microsoft party. Such account information may include name, address, email and age but will not include any credit card or other payment information." Those "Microsoft parties" are the company's "affiliates, resellers, distributors, service providers, partners and suppliers," so the new terms of use appear to stretch beyond that to these third-party services.
Source. AS OF YET, THESE CHANGES HAVEN'T GONE LIVE, AND THE OLD OPT OUT SYSTEM IS STILL INTACT. So they are making it mandatory to share some contact information with third parties in the new Terms of Service change right before a release of a new console? Stop it Microsoft.
Anything for another dollar.
as if microsoft/xbox/whatever the new fucking failure MS put out accounts aren't horrendous to work with enough. i really cannot see this going well though, it'll get reverted a few months after.
How about bite me?
So they made it so that when you use an app on live, they don't have to ask you to provide information to them. I would be more worried about the services' privacy policies instead, but since the information is going to things like Netflix and ESPN according to the article, that shouldn't be a problem. The part about keeping contact information up to date makes sense if you are able to use your live account to sign up for a subscription to any of these services, instead of going and filling out a whole form for them they could set it up to charge through your live account.
I'm fine with Name and age, it's just email that worries me.
Someone needs to make a random email address on their own domain, put it in and see how much spam they get
Maybe they're planning something like this?
Okay so two questions: Why are people rating this dumb, I would love to know the reasons. Secondly, why is this a problem? They are passing information to people who by the sounds of it anyone who wants their services would have given their information to anyway, it just sounds like they are going to save people time and or allowing the service provider to check it isn't fraudulent. Also in certain places (like the UK) they are legally obliged to keep any information about you as current as possible which might explain why they are now requiring it in their ToS. (Why do I get the feeling that most of the people who have issues with this are simply going along the lines of "LOL ITS MICROSOFT ANYTHING THEY DO IS BAD!!")
last thing I want is more spam in my email
You arn't going to get spam from reputable sites like netflix and google as long as you check the no box when signing up. It's not like your email is available to every person to see just reputable companies that make apps.
are people rating this dumb, I would love to know the reasons.
Because it's another "oh microsoft is stupid" thread. Anyone reading the article should understand that they give your information to people you're buying things from. ESPN, Netflix, the list goes on. But wait, there's more!
Those "Microsoft parties" are the company's "affiliates, resellers, distributors, service providers, partners and suppliers," so the new terms of use appear to stretch beyond that to these third-party services. As it stands now, users can access their account settings on Xbox.com to opt-out of sharing contact information with Xbox partners.
For those that don't understand, you can tell Microsoft not to give your information away. Unlike what the OP would have you believe, it is NOT mandatory. It is completely optional. And if you check your Contact Preferences page, it is turned off by default.
good job reading the article
I read it thanks.

Also it goes beyond apps since all 'partners' can request info.
The ToS change which hasn't gone live yet does away with that. If you choose to link this account with your Xbox Live account, we confirm key data points across the accounts by sharing data such as your name, address, email address and date of birth with the partner. In this TOU update, customers agree to allow Microsoft to share this information in this manner.
When you download an app, they get your info. There is nothing wrong with this. [editline]30th October 2013[/editline] Here's the fancy version, same thing but suddenly they have high priority info like achievements and what your avatar looks like.
We require certain permissions in order for you to evaluate or use and for us to enable the features and functions of the Xbox LIVE/Games for Windows-LIVE service. These features and functions include leaderboards, live-hosted gameplay, achievements, tournaments, and gamer profile sharing. If you evaluate or use or we enable these features and functions, you grant Microsoft and its affiliates, resellers, distributors, service providers, partners, and suppliers (each, a "Microsoft party") the following permissions: Microsoft parties may use, track, store, copy, distribute, broadcast, transmit, publicly display and perform, and reproduce: (i) your game scores; (ii) your game play sessions; (iii) your presence on the Xbox LIVE/Games for Windows-LIVE service; (iv) the time that you spend on or within particular portions of the Xbox LIVE/Games for Windows-LIVE service; (v) portions of the Xbox LIVE/Games for Window-LIVE service that are displayed on your monitor or screen and the duration of that display; (vi) rankings, statistics, gamer profiles, avatars, and content that you may submit; and (vii) other usage information. These permissions apply with or without attribution to you, your gamertag or avatar. We may use these permissions without notice or compensation to you of any kind. To avoid any confusion, we have the right to make information pertaining to your use of, and gameplay on, Xbox LIVE available through Games for Windows-LIVE, and vice versa. If you choose to link your Services account with the account of a Microsoft party on the Xbox LIVE service (for example, a game publisher or app provider), you agree that Microsoft may share limited account information with that Microsoft party. Such account information may include name, address, email and age but will not include any credit card or other payment information.

When you download an app, they get your info. There is nothing wrong with this.
True, but resellers like GameStop should not be able to request info.
True, but resellers like GameStop should not be able to request info.
Neither should Macy's, Wal-mart, and Burger King but thankfully they don't have Xbox Live apps.
good job reading the article
What did you expect? ZachPL is the MS Xbox White Knight.
Neither should Macy's, Wal-mart, and Burger King but thankfully they don't have Xbox Live apps.
Don't jinx it!!!
If you're so afraid of spam email and the what not, why not just use fictitious information?
I'm fine with updating contact information to increase security in case my account gets fucked with or stolen (happens more than you think) but I don't see any reason to share my info with any third parties. Microsoft: money > consumers. A true American company
so i actually read the article. this is what you posted from the article
hose "Microsoft parties" are the company's "affiliates, resellers, distributors, service providers, partners and suppliers," so the new terms of use appear to stretch beyond that to these third-party services.
this is the full thing
Those "Microsoft parties" are the company's "affiliates, resellers, distributors, service providers, partners and suppliers," so the new terms of use appear to stretch beyond that to these third-party services. As it stands now, users can access their account settings on Xbox.com to opt-out of sharing contact information with Xbox partners.
there's no way you ~accidentally~ didn't include this sentence in the last paragraph. good job spreading more misinformation about the xbox one, while simultaneously ragging on people who are "blindly" defending the xbox, or "blindly" bashing the Ps4.
What did you expect? ZachPL is the MS Xbox White Knight.
I'd say a lot of people in SH are just as bad as ZachPL, they hate the Xbox very much and some love the PS4 as much as ZachPL loves Xbox, and it goes unnoticed because that seems to be the bandwagon here. Don't get me wrong, if I get a console the first one I'm going to get is the PS4, but some people here just hate Xbox just to hate Xbox and love the PS4 to death even when Sony tries to pull stuff like "the only way you can listen to music is our music streaming function" or "some parts of games can't be streamed just to make life harder for people who like to stream their games", and those people in my eyes are just as bad as ZachPL.

We will have to see once this change goes live to see if it still around.
This is before the ToS change. We have no idea if this will still exist after the change, especially since it contradicts the opt-out's existence.
then why'd you chose to exclude it from your post, especially if you don't know if it's going to change or not?
then why'd you chose to exclude it from your post, especially if you don't know if it's going to change or not?
Same reason why when Agoat pointed it out, it is contradictory to the new ToS.
"hello, gamestop? ya its me again....i'm cancling my xbox-one pre-order....again" *------* "ya this time its the NSA snooper info thats got it for me...." *------------* "look i know its the 15th time this has happened but i am going to be very selective of what i buy, just do it"
