Sony Corp. (6758) Chief Executive Officer Kazuo Hirai apologized to investors after the company forecast a sixth loss in seven years, and he pledged that his restructuring efforts would fuel the electronics maker’s long-term growth.“Sorry that we failed to meet shareholders’ expectations,” Hirai said at the company’s annual meeting in Tokyo. “We will bear responsibility to complete restructuring in fiscal 2014, with a strong sense of crisis and without further delay.” Sony has lost 85 billion yen ($831 million) since Hirai became CEO in 2012 and predicts another 50 billion-yen loss this year as he struggles to revive the television business. The 53-year-old is counting on more restructuring, a slate of “Amazing Spider-Man” films, new Xperia smartphones and potential sales of the PS4 in China to revive its fortunes against Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Samsung Electronics Co. “There’s only a 50 percent chance that Hirai can complete restructuring this year, it’s not an easy task,” said 83-year-old Tsukasa Kaneda, a Sony shareholder for more than 50 years. “I hope Sony can make great products again, like when the company was first founded.” Sony American depositary receipts gained 3.3 percent to $16.84 at the close in New York, the most since March 25. They have declined 2.6 percent this year. It will be a sad day when Sony dies, if it does happen within my lifetime.
I'd sure love to help them stay afloat by buying more of their products, but too bad their vita memory cards have a 400%+ mark up..
It will be a sad day when Sony dies, if it does happen within my lifetime.
I think they should invest in trying to make a flat screen CRT personally (Google "SED TV") I think it would be fucking awesome and I think they could really be a real force if they could integrate it with their older Trinitron technology. I certainly would be up for donating the first paycheck I ever get to buying such a set.
honestly, considering how sony tends to overprice stuff in brazil(including the PS3 and afterwards the PS4) and are one of the top companies in complaints over here, i couldn't care one bit about them going under, good riddance :v:

They sell consoles at a loss, your country just has a stupid fucking massive tax on luxury items which causes the consoles to be nearly $2000 USD IIRC. Blame your corrupt ass government, not Sony.
if that PS4-Vita pack comes to Canada for no more than $600 sure I'll but some of there products.

You know what would be really, really, really cool? If they gave Vita an "Other OS" option, like the one that PS3 used to have before Geohot
When Sony becomes dead I will both be sad and happy. Happy that there will finally be one less shitty archeotechnological console that gobbles up games and jacks them out as sub-30 fps exclusives, that is. Hail the masterrace and hail the coming of the God Emperor.

Still sad that exclusives have pretty much settled in now as an official 'thing'.

The PS3 was at least interesting as it let people dick about with the Cell a bit, and worked fairly well as a desktop machine. On a handheld it just seems useless (and a great way to go the way of the PSP when the inevitable security flaws are found and piracy runs rampant).
I'm glad you'd like one of the most innovative hardware companies of all time to go under because their video game consoles are expensive in the country you live in
aham, never mind they're one of the top companies in complaints over here, they're so innocent.
The XBOX ONE OUT THERE IS MORE EXPENSIVE AND WILL BE RELEASED HERE FOR HALF PRICE! It is already confirmed that the Xbox One will be manufactured in Brazil (though the concept of "made in Brazil" is relative; its assured that the console is manufactured outside of Brazil, but assembled in Brazil), so MS has a substantial reduction in tax in relation to the Sony PS4. And then the question remains: why Sony, which has factories in Brazil, cannot do this, but MS, which does not, can? Probably because of the problems that Sony Worldwide having to honor the pre-orders that were made (remember that the console will take some time to be released in Japan). Sony Brazil would have gotten only a few consoles, and not the mounting kits, so it has to import the already made product. Since the MS has no problems with the pre-sales, the brazilian MS could do a similar scheme with the Xbox 360. Everything seemed fine for Sony at this point, they were doing everything right ... But then I took a new look at the spreadsheet. Sony made sure to make a separate spreadsheet with a "tax summary", listing all taxes on that price. What would be fine, if not for the last line: "Income taxes (Imposto de Renda Pessoa Jurídica (IRPJ) = Corporate Income Tax/ contribuição social sobre o lucro líquido (CSLL) = Social Contribution)." For those who do not know, IRPJ is the income tax on corporations and CSLL is the social contribution on net income. We have two problems with this line: 1 - When you put these taxes as part of the "tax burden", Sony would have you believe that these taxes are part of what they say is 66% of the price of the PS4 fault of taxes. This is false. IRPJ e CSLL taxes are calculated on the operations of the company, not to the individual selling the product; as such, it is not and can not be part of the price of the console. If Sony has this year had a profit of zero dollars, it pays nothing in IRPJ e CSLL taxes, regardless if sony had sold 1, 10 or 100.000 PS4 units But okay, it may be that Sony has placed this calculation because there are thinking that this is what everyone involved in selling the PS4 (and Sony store) will need to paid from the money they earn with it. But then we come to the main issue... 2 - The rate of IRPJ for Sony and Retail ("sale of goods or products") is 8% on profits. And the rate of CSLL is 9% on profits. In essence, this line is reflecting a total tax of 17% on income (again, adding both the profits of Sony Corporation and Retail). To facilitate the calculations, we will neglect the operational costs and pretend that everything that isn't the original cost of the console or tax is corporate profit. Well, they say that these taxes totaled R$ 297.73. If this is 17% on total income, then the total profit that Sony and Retail would have on the PS4 will be of impressive R$ 1,751.35 Since we compute the store profits as 16%, totaling R$ 618.27, we have that the profit which Sony itself estimates have on the sale of the PS4 is R$ 1,133.08. How so? Sony wasn't swallowing a R$258.00 discount to leave the price in 4000 reais? Wasn't Mark Stanley talking all sad and gloomy that "by this value we would not wish to sell even a single PS4 in Brazil"? Then what should we think? You can't say that they just put out random numbers, because all other calculations match with what the law says (within my meager knowledge of tax laws). If only they tried to put this line with a random number to increase the "tax burden" numbers and improve Sony's argument that "the Brazilian government is evil as a woodpecker", it was a tremendous stupidity, since they only succeeded in increasing the tax burden from 63% to 66%. There can only get one conclusion ... SONY IS LYING.
Hopefully they can get OLED burn-in problems fixed, then we can have Sub-1MS delay on monitors, great color, low power, etc. All we need to do next is have monitors branch off from TVs, so that we can instead of progressively scanning down the screen, pull a CCD and display each line at the same time on screen.
