After initially creating a security scare, Air India officials claimed that what they thought was a ```defused grenade’’ in an aircraft turned out to be a "plastic wrapper."
Officials said one reason for the confusion was that Indian security agencies were not involved and the search took place at Jeddah airport.
Security agencies in Saudi Arabia boarded the flight on Friday night soon after it landed at Jeddah and the crew got in touch with them about an identified object on one of the seat pockets.
The Boeing 747-400 was on flight AI-965 from Mumbai to Jeddah via Hyderabad.
The plane was cleared for further operations after the security forces retrieved the object, which later turned out to be a plastic wrapper, said a statement by Air India.
how do you fuck up that badly
How embarrassing
I can see how one would get those two things confused
I'm glad the situation was under wraps.
Pretty funny how this unfolded.
I'm glad they were able to defuse the situation
How monumentally inept do you have to be in order to confuse a fucking plastic wrapper for a grenade?!

This is on the low end for monumental ineptness in my country. There was a time they mistook some toothpowder for a bomb, but that was a long haul ago and not even printed in the big papers.
I have made the same mistake very many times

Yeah, I made myself a sandwich for a long trip to Berlin and tried putting some plastic wrapper around it. Now I am sitting in hospital typing this message with my left arm.
That's one very, very defused grenade.
i can understand mistaking something for a grenade, maybe. but a defused grenade? how does someone come to that conclusion?

By it not blowing up.
Aviation minister just made another statement;
Union Civil Aviation Minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Saturday confirmed that a stun grenade was found on board Air India Boeing 746, the standby aircraft for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at Jeddah airport.
He was replying to media persons’ queries on the finding of “suspicious object” in the aircraft.
He said the stun grenade was probably used during an earlier anti-hijacking drill. It was found by an airhostess and she immediately brought it to the pilot’s notice. “The grenade has the BSF insignia. We have ordered an inquiry,” he said.
