Trump calls for boycott of television network CNN: tweet
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump urged a boycott of CNN on Wednesday, ramping up his fight against the television network as his administration fights AT&T Inc’s deal to buy CNN’s owner Time Warner Inc.
Trump has criticized the proposed deal, which the Justice Department has sued to stop. Legal experts have said the president’s attacks on CNN could hobble his administration’s case.
The president, who regularly assails mainstream media, has long criticized CNN, calling the network “fake news” and saying he no longer watches it, while lauding rival Fox News. His call for a boycott appeared to be a step up in his attacks.
“Great, and we should boycott Fake News CNN. Dealing with them is a total waste of time!,” Trump wrote in a Twitter post.
Trump was responding to a post by his spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, who in her own post on Tuesday night praised reports that CNN would not attend an annual holiday party held at the White House for news media.
It was not immediately clear if Trump in his post was calling for a wider boycott against CNN or one by White House staff. Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Representatives for CNN also did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s tweet on Wednesday. A CNN spokesperson told Politico that it would not attend the party “in light of the President’s continued attacks on freedom of the press and CNN” but would send a reporting crew to cover the event, Politico reported on Tuesday.
The network and its journalists have repeatedly defended CNN’s work against previous presidential attacks.
The Department of Justice’s challenge is unusual move given that pay TV and wireless company AT&T does not directly compete with TV show maker Time Warner. The department has said the lawsuit is a law enforcement decision, not a political one.
Pathetic.
Guess I’ll keep CNN on my TV for a while
Wow, he's really upping his shit post game
Likely because he retweeted those pro-Putin For Britiania videos and he's covering that news up with some news of being an even bigger maroon.
I can't think of any other historical leader, except dictators, who would use their influence like this.
Jeez it must be embarrassing to have actually voted for this senile clown.
does anyone else think something must have really rattled his cage within the last day or so? he seems more demented than usual

Maybe the Flynn news that broke a few days ago?
I'm really wondering what news he doesn't want his rabid base to see/believe. I'm guessing we'll know within the week.

Flynn does a full testimonial in exchange for a reduced sentence?
This is an attack on free speech.
It's amazing, the simple pleasures one gains from life. For instance, the act of watching dominoes falling down.
Isn't there a rule against the president calling for something like this?

The Republicans haven't held Trump accountable yet, dunno why they'd start now.
Honestly, why isn't there an unbiased or at least opposition party holding him accountable?
Honestly, why isn't there an unbiased or at least opposition party holding him accountable?
Money
Honestly, why isn't there an unbiased or at least opposition party holding him accountable?
What do you mean by party? And also what do you mean by holding him accountable?
Anyone who would actually listen to his deranged ramblings probably doesn't watch CNN anyway.
Honestly, why isn't there an unbiased or at least opposition party holding him accountable?
The Democrats were going to meet with him, then he posted some dumb shit on Twitter and the party pulled out and went to Congressional Republicans instead. Something like that? Or are you talking the Republicans to grow backbones and tell him to stop running his mouth, because that won't happen.
None of the people who subscribe to Trump's bullshit watch CNN anyway. What's the point?
should there not be an unbiased power that checks to make sure he isn't breaking laws?
should there not be an unbiased power that checks to make sure he isn't breaking laws?
What law is he breaking here?
What law is he breaking here?
Law or rule or anything that could constitute impeachment like everyone keeps wailing
What law is he breaking here?
The First Amendment?
The First Amendment?
Saying that something should be boycotted isnt a violation of the first amendment, its a shitty thing to do but not an illegal one
Saying that something should be boycotted isnt a violation of the first amendment
It is when you're a representative of the United States government.
This wouldn't be an issue if Trump were a private citizen. People call for boycotts all the time. It becomes a problem when members of government exert their influence to curb freedom of expression. And Trump isn't even just any old government employee, he's the fucking President of the United States of America -- arguably the most influential individual in the entire government.
As usual, Trump is behaving as if he's still a private citizen and not an elected representative, completely uninterested in the responsibilities of the office he now holds.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t actually expect Trump to be held accountable for any of this, but in a world where we still cared about ethics this would be a major ethical violation.

What a contradictory tweet. You're calling for a boycott, yet you state that dealing with CNN is a total waste of time. Either a hypocrite or a cretin, probably both.
Another dumbass tweet, moving on...
While I'm pretty sure that this will have no effect on CNN or Fox's viewership, as I would imagine that their viewer bases do not overlap much, I can't help by think that this is grossly unethical, and possibly illegal. It might not actually be illegal in the technical sense, but in effect this is using public office as a walking advertisement of Fox and their services, which should be a huge conflict of interest. I don't know if the president is immune to that sort of issue, but I would imagine that this violates some sort of ethics clause that is part of the position, or at the very least the spirit of it.
The president will certainly have an economic impact on the country with their policies, but specific targeting of companies sets an awful precedent. Much like lobbying is sometimes hated and viewed as a source of corruption, as lobbyists can often influence politicians far more than constituents in many cases, this would effectively be like electing a lobbyist for a single company to be the leader of the entire country.
Imagine if every four years, a single company with its own special interests was chosen to direct policy, legislation, and nominate judiciary members for the entire country.
Edit:
coherency and grammar.
It's somewhat ironic that the hypothetical tyrant that Republicans used in their discussions to vehemently advocate against gun control is currently the president, and the person whose very teet they're suckling from without question.
