Quebec to ban all Sikh children wearing turbans from playing soccer
The Quebec Soccer Federation says it will uphold its turban ban on the field, and those who don't obey the rules can "play in their backyards."
The federation's executive-director, Brigitte Frot, says the organization takes safety too seriously to allow turban-wearing boys and will only change its stance if ordered to by FIFA, soccer's international governing body.

However, she admits she has no idea what the safety issues are and knows of no injuries involving turbans.

She says the Quebec Soccer Federation will be glad to welcome boys in turbans if FIFA rules that they are safe. However, the federation won't lobby FIFA to conduct a safety study.
Turbans, including the patka and keski typically worn by young Sikhs, haven’t been allowed on Quebec soccer fields since the QSF banned them last year.
Sensationalist as fuck
You can't just undermine somebody's beliefs for the sake of them tripping over their own turban.
What? That's ridiculous to ban them.
However, I don't know why you'd want to wear a turban playing soccer. I knew a guy in High School who took his off during game to keep it from getting all sweaty and dirty.
I would think Turbans would not bring up any safety issues... and depending on the length of the user's hair maybe even make them more safe.
Surely you can't play football with a turban very well especially headers.
I know a young Sikh who wears a patka. There is no way that could be a safety issue for soccer. At the same time, Sikh tradition also includes some giant turbans with metal holding them together that would be an issue (they're not that common, though). Obviously, though, a ban on all of them is horribly ignorant.
Turbans look rad as fuck.
Oh you Quebec, it's no wonder why nobody likes you.
cant wait till this is struck down as discriminatory
This just in:
The only reason the rest of Canada still likes Quebec is because it makes Canada the second largest country on the planet.
Edited: And maple syrup
Edited: And Poutine.
I don't particularly like Quebec, I have family there (being sikh). I love Montreal though.
But this ban is just simply stupid, it apparently has to do FIFA rules or official football rules in europe putting a ban on headgear or something, as far as I understood from it.. so they feel similar rules should be applied to childrens football. Which doesn't make a lot of sense really

yadayada.
quebec bashing for a private soccer league.
please.
IIRC, the feds already told Quebec not to do this.

Hi I live in BC (Western Canada)
Everyone here hates Quebec. I can understand if Quebec doesn't like Burkas (or other clothing that completely covers your body) in the medical room, but not allowing turbans in sports is just dumb.
Not sure if Quebec is really looking out for others or just trying to do what France is doing.
I wasn't aware Quebec was such an hated place. Is it because of the french?

Quebec doesn't like most of the rest of Canada and most of Canada doesn't like Quebec. (they nearly separated from Canada for those who aren't canadian)
Basically they've never been on good terms with anyone besides France.

I live in the Vancouver area and no one likes Quebec here.

According to my father whose been to Canada several times, he told me the people there are really stuck up and more or less assholes to anyone who isn't from Quebec. While in Toronto for a month he said the people there hate French Canada because of the same reason, may not be that reason but who knows.
In my experience, the only people in Vancouver that literally hate Quebec are ignorant fucktards who don't understand anything about Quebec and almost assuredly have never been there.
I miss when turbans were considered cool and cultural instead of some mark if shame because terrorism etc
Remember how cool you thought Picollo was for having a turban?

Sikh soldiers look awesome with them on.

If these things can survive the throes of military combat, it won't hurt to let some kids wear them in a game of soccer.
I am from Quebec, and I can confirm it is shitty, especially being a primarily english speaking person.

There's a lot of history of turbulent cultural issues between Quebec and English-speaking Canada.
In the past there was a tremendous degree of blatant discrimination against french speaking people who lived in Quebec. In turn it's made Quebec sort of entrenched in it's own culture.

Really? I I've been to Quebec twice and I loved it there! I was only really in the old part of Quebec city though so other areas might be worse.

Same here, but I've heard if you run into separatists they're giant assholes if they can tell you're not from Quebec. Chances are, neither of us ran into any because we were in the touristy parts of the city doing touristy things.

I've been through Montreal, Rimouski and a bunch of small towns in-between and people treat you fine as long as you at least make a vain attempt to speak French to them. People just don't seem to like it when you expect them to speak English to you right off the bat.
I'm probably going to Quebec in 3 years for my studies, would stay there for 2.
It can't be that bad can it, good thing I speak fluent French I guess anyway.
At work I can't even count the amount of times people I work with have been shit on by customers because they aren't completely fluent in french, it's not like they aren't trying. Even I sometimes run into new words and customers get mad when I have to ask what it means, basically it's not a pleasant place unless you're a pepper.

I have a problem with that. Nobody in Toronto acts like an asshole if someone comes up and starts speaking French to them, they just say they don't understand, so why do people act like assholes there if you don't speak French when you don't know any and don't want to be misinterpreted? I've even heard of people who'll pretend not to understand English, make you ask them whatever question you were going to ask in French, and then respond to you in English. IMO, they've got no reason to be an asshole just because you're not from Quebec and/or don't speak French, if they don't know English, then they can just say so, I think everyone with a grade 4 education understands <<Je ne comprend pas.>>
And Quebec calls us Albertans racists and intolerant. First cracking down on Anglophones, now Sikhs.
I know plenty of Sikhs who play soccer and their Turbans never get in the way of them playing or put them at any risk.
Quebec sure is great isn't it, basically electing a borderline facist party.

Canadian federal law is on his side. He will win. Reasonable accommodation comes to mind.
