I feel like that's not a terrible approach to it.
I mean, let's be honest, Sonic is not known for its writing. Ever. But holy guacamole this is literally edgy anime villain and the music is the kind of shit a dub company would slap ontop of his scenes in the 90s.
It's like Sonic Forces has just embraced it's Deviantart fanbase, from the edgy music right down to the OCs

I'm honestly pretty excited, it's gonna' be a great laugh sitting through the whole story and making various abominations in the character creator with my friends. And we get Mania next month for a proper classic experience, it's a good year by my tastes.

Shadow was a weird sort of edgy. He was practically a fancharacter in design and style, but it was very.. self-aware, or at the very least non-serious. "I'm the coolest!" Then his own game crops up and suddenly he's got guns and cursing because Sonic Team thought "hey this is what the kids in the west like, right?"
Infinite is literally a giant walking cliche fanfic villain, almost essentially a parody of the edgy villain archetype just from what little they've shown us. Which is more and more making me feel like he's meant to be a direct rival to the Custom Hero rather than Sonic.
How can anyone be mad at this?! It's hilarious!
Hell, maybe making THE supreme edgelord that is Infinite (jfc this fucking name) canon will make the fanbase (at the very least kids and teens) realize edgelords aren't cool anymore and actually put some effort when creating something.
