I'll be honest, I never expected this to hit beta. It's neat to see after its endless alphas over the years.
I'm going to die before this game is done.
No idea why people are giving this hate, Lugaru was nothing to write home about aside from being a neat fighting game, and that video shows some amazing graphical improvements while still keeping the same gameplay.
Almost every game stays in early access on steam I guess.

It gets hate because it's been in development for an excessive period of time with semi-constant alpha updates of new engine and gameplay features or tweaks that people could mess with almost every step of the way. Except a lot of it was basically implementing neat new ideas and just never much in the way of actual game development. It's great combat but with nothing to do except play a remake of Lugaru or make your own fights.
what happened to that web comic for this game? Were there more updates to that as well?

Maybe because the dev went and spent all day shitposting about politics on twitter instead of updating his game for years.
if you buy an unfinished project with no release date given other than "when it's done" you have no one but yourself to blame if you're upset it's taking a long time
i bought this game when I was in 7th grade before I had a concept of what getting fucked by early access meant
that was the first time i was fooled into buying an early access game, but it wouldn't be the last
I had two accounts with them. I lost the first one, bought again a year or two later?
"Early Access" wasn't even a name at the time. Account creation: January 2010, last login: August 2011.
It's certainly been awhile. :v:

Overgrowth should have been a brand new game on a new engine. After 8 years they have nothing but a remaster of Lugaru on a new engine. Unless "Lugaru Remaster" is in fact their final product with a full release soon, this doesn't sound like a beta at all.
I remember wayyyy back when I first saw this game, it looked amazing. Although, it didn't age well visually.
It's like Wasted Time: The Game. They spent 8 years and a significant amount of money developing what exactly? You run around and kick things? It's not necessarily bad but this just seems like a bland indie project that got drawn wayyyy out, I don't really understand the appeal.

The dev blog/update videos were full of technical candy and amazing features... for the time. This game has suffered in that the slow updates caused what was a breakthrough game to become "neat" and already visually outdated.
I think the dev is afraid of actually starting development on the campaign, because he/they do not know what to do with that and only truly wanted to write a game engine.
That and also Wolfire is technically a part of the Humble Bundle company, but I heard they split into their own thing now.
I got it as a bonus when they did the pre-order pack with natural selection 2 back in 2010, I never actually expected the alpha to end at the rate it was going.

Which really sucks because I remember getting drawn to this game because of that comic series they made...
I remember playing an EXTREMELY early alpha of this so very long ago.
I cannot imagine what the game is like now

Open beta/early access practically means the game is done in a contemporary sense.
With all the money they've been making from humble bundle I'm amazed they even decided to keep working on this.

It hasn't actually changed all that much... in the grand scheme of things that is. I lost interest 5+ years ago, after many years of active interest and keeping up with development as both a gamer and fellow dev.

It has been in development for around the same amount of time it took Valve to make Half-Life 2 and the episodes, and it still doesn't have a campaign. They've spent years developing the engine for it, and in the mean time, both Unity and Unreal have come out and made it possible for developers to achieve better looking results in significantly less time, making it look graphically dated even though it's not out yet.
I could definitely see why people who preordered a game 9 years ago are upset that it's just now entering beta.
Honestly, with all the bonuses they threw in like Receiver I feel like I got my money's worth whatever they end up doing with this.
Legitimately been so fucking long I can't even remember if I backed this damn game.
It's been so long in development that people are starting to forget how incredible the tech in this game actually is. If they had kept focused and released the game in 2011-2012 with a small story mode, it would have been lauded as one of the best indie games ever made. When people look at it now, especially when it's just a surface glance and without knowing the engine, it doesn't look that impressive anymore.
This GDC conference puts in perspective how amazing the procedural animation and ragdoll physics are in this game, and the really old dev blogs go in more depth about the whole process.
Look at the bright side: Even this will probably be released before HL3.

I remember being amazed by update videos showcasing new attacks or movement patterns or AI scripts, back in highschool.
Honestly they're just as impressive now. Maybe a bit less in perspective because we're actually getting some proper shooters with decent movement, but Lugaru and Overgrowth still have a very complete, very smooth movement system. It works well for it's intended purpose and it'd sit very nicely in a free-roam game.

What's the hype around half life 3 anyways? You just run around and shoot things?
Anyway, my best explanation for overgrowth is that it's a level based reflex fighting game with some stealth elements and a campaign. For every scenario you have to 'scout ahead' and plan your approach. Or anyway, in Lugaru i had, the fighting is actually challenging.
It's not everyones cup of tea but i can clearly see the appeal.

It's been (mostly?) separate for a while (which is good because I got a refund for Overgrowth over terrible dev behaviour (unrelated to the game, but when I preorder something it's to support the creators and not to support the product)).

It's the perfect example why you don't make your own engine to make your indie game, the stuff they showed in the blog posts back in the day was incredibly impressive but by modern standards they've basically been reinventing the wheel the whole time and I can't imagine anyone is going to get a license for their engine over UE4 or Unity, if that's what they were hoping to accomplish
I feel like, while the improvements on the combat and physics make it even better, its been more than enough for a couple years. Their focus should be on game modes and other shit, like multiplayer, a good story mode, maybe towns, villages idk whateverything that gives the whole combat a purpose.

I swear I thought they were working on a sandbox like mode where you could either fight in arenas as a slave or as a prisoner? I remember something about a campaign mode too but I honestly can't remember.
