Discovery Channel crashed a Boeing 727 passenger jet Friday in the Sonoran Desert in Mexico as part of its documentary series "Curiosity."
The as-yet-untitled episode will look to "re-create a serious, but survivable, passenger jet crash landing with a real aircraft," Discovery said in a statement. The plane was loaded with crash test dummies and cameras to examine impact. The plane was also followed by other planes filming the crash and by camera crews on the ground that also documented the event.
"This groundbreaking project features an actual crash of a passenger jet and explores the big questions about how to make plane crashes more survivable; it's the ideal premiere episode for our 'Curiosity' series that stirs the imagination of our audience, bravely asking questions and fearlessly seeking answers," said Eileen O'Neill, president of Discovery Channel.
Discovery said safety precautions were taken and that the Mexican military and police, as well as private security, staffed the area of the crash. The aircraft will eventually be salvaged and Discovery said an "extensive environmental cleanup operation is being carried out by a reputable agency with the full cooperation of the Mexican authorities." The pilot ejected from the plane minutes before impact.
The episode will be shown on Discovery later this year.
Years ago, Fox considered crashing a plane for a reality special. However the project never got off the ground after critics complained the network was doing it for sensationalistic, rather than educational, reasons.
Fuck
Wait, a show on discovery channel thats not a shitty reality show where they bastardize guns, or sell trash at an auction house? Might actually be worth watching.
First thought the mythbusters were in on this. Sort-of saddened they weren't, but I'll definitely check out the footage on Youtube just the same.
I've always wanted to see a real crash of a large passenger jet
expensive, but awesome
Discovery Channel owns many channels; Curiosity only airs on SCI (Science Channel) as far as I know. I would strongly suggest getting that channel if you don't have it already. The stuff that comes on that channel is mind blowing and is a very nice change compared to what's on Discovery's other channels.
Pretty sure i've seen it on discovery channel, never heard of SCI.

Science Channel is their only good channel these days.

I wish we could ban FOX.

Yeah, sure is stupid.
I love their Curioisity series, i watched a few of them when they were sunday specials.
Discovery is still a great show, but people fail to realize that discovery wasn't meant to be 100% science and moan about their new shows. Although i must admit 1 show about guns is enough, we don't need two.
"Alright guys we got-FUCK FRANK YOU LEFT THE LENS CAP ON"
"whaDAMNIT"
It's Discovery Channel, they have shit loads of money for experiments like this!
I may have missed something in the article, but how was it controlled? Remote control or...?
Curiosity is pretty cool. One week they have a coke head, meth head, stoner, and heroin junkie doing shit like driving and building furniture. Next week Maggie Gyllenhaal is doing sex ed or some shit I can't remember but it was so cash
poor 727
This was done a very long time ago.

Will be nice to see it updated.

The pilot ejected minutes before the impact, the article says.
That, uh.
That doesn't look survivable :v: At least for the folks up front.
Poor dummy bastards, WHEN WILL THE PERSECUTION END?

ignore the music if it's not your taste but the plane crash is beautiful
I misread the title as Disney Channel and was INCREDIBLY confused for a second.
How the hell do you eject from a 727?
When NASA did that back in the 80s, they used remote control. I'm sure Grant could've wired one up for them.
for a moment i read "disney channel crashes plane for a documentary"
oh man
Fuckin love the science channel
That'd be pretty shitty if they missed the shot for some fucking reason and had to redo it all over again.
Discovery is just redneck network now.
All of the awesome explosion, none of the feeling bad after watching it.
Science!
ejecting out of a 727 as it crashes below you sounds like something a rich billionaire would do on his weekends for a thrill
imagine being that pilot and being approached with that, lmfao

What the fuck. I read this comment and practically shit my pants when I saw it wasn't Disney. Anyways, this is really good. For entertainment and safety.
