[release]Harpoon ships belonging to Japan's whaling fleet have left their home port, possibly heralding the start of this season's hunt. There are fears of more violent clashes in the coming months between the whalers and conservation group activists. Unlike previous years, the harpoon ships Yushin Maru and Yushin Maru Two left Shimonoseki port without ceremony or a send-off. It's believed the vessels are on their way to rendezvous with the whaling fleet's factory ship the Nisshin Maru, before heading south to the Antarctic whaling grounds. Also preparing to weigh anchor is the Sea Shepherd conservation group, which is again planning to harass the whaling fleet with its own flotilla of ships. Sea Shepherd's founder, Paul Watson, claims the Australian Government is hampering its preparations by refusing a visa for the group's helicopter pilot, Chris Aultman. Mr Watson told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat that the government has not given a reason for denying Mr Aultman a visa. "He has no criminal record, he's a former US Marine Corp, veteran of the Gulf War. A helicopter professional," Mr Watson said. "And so he has to wait [until] Thursday before they give him a reason." Japan has promised to send a patrol ship with the whaling fleet to monitor possible confrontations with Sea Shepherd activists. More Japanese coastguard officers will also dispatched with the power to arrest anyone who trespasses on the whaling ships. Last year, after repeated clashes, Japan called off the hunt after catching only a fifth of its quota.[/release] http://abcasiapacificnews.com/stories/201112/3384348.htm Funding uproar hits Japan whaling [release]Conservation groups have criticised the Japanese government for funding this year's whaling mission in the Southern Ocean with money from the country's earthquake and tsunami recovery fund. In all, $US28 million has been set aside to help protect the fleet. The Japanese Fisheries Agency says it is a legitimate use of the money as whaling towns affected by the earthquake and tsunami will benefit. But Junichi Sato, from Greenpeace Japan, says it is a tenuous link. Unrelated "It's not related to the recovery at all. It is simply used to cover the debts of the whaling program, because the whaling program itself has been suffering from a big financial problems." The Australian Environment Minister, Tony Burke, said it was not appropriate to spend any money on Japanese whaling. He said: "I don't think it's appopriate for any money to be spent on Japanese whaling. "Regardless of where money's coming from our position is really simple. There's no shades of grey here. "We believe the Southern Ocean is a whaling sanctuary and all whaling that occurs there is wrong." The Sea Shepherd Conservation group says people who donated to the recovery fund would be horrified to find their money is being used to support whaling. The Australian Opposition is calling for the Gillard Goverment to send a customs boat to observe this year's Japanese whale hunt in the Southern Ocean. Anti-whaling activists are also planning to travel to the whaling area in an attempt to disrupt the process. There are fears of more violent clashes in coming months between the whalers and conservation group activists. The Coalition's environment spokesman, Greg Hunt, says a clash is inevitable and the Government needs to send an observer. "The Government is turning a blind eye to the risk of conflict or tragedy in Australia waters," he said. "It's time for the Australian Government for reasons of maritime safety, for reasons of chronicling the annual slaughter to send a customs vessel to the Southern Ocean as quickly as possible."[/release] http://abcasiapacificnews.com/stories/201112/3385246.htm?desktop This is getting really heated. I'm not sure what kind of protection Japan is sending with this year. Unless they're referring to the "Patrol boat" as the boat they had last year with water cannons on it, this could be really tense. At most we could have the Japanese Coast Guard on board the whaling ships and this "patrol boat", along with Sea Shepherds 3 boats and a possible Australian Customs vessel. I doubt it will be a military boat as Japan refused requests to send a military vessel. The 28 million dollars of tsunami relief money is more than the Whaling fleet has seen in years. They're going to be packing heat this time. They're essentially injecting aid money into a thing that hasn't generated a real profit in years - stay classy.
whaling towns
Isn't Japanese whaling supposed to be scientific only?
Isn't Japanese whaling supposed to be scientific only?
Loophole. Everyone knows it's never been scientific.
Isn't Japanese whaling supposed to be scientific only?
They've been taking the piss about that for years, they catch and kill rediculous amounts of whales for 'scientific research', way more than they would need if they were just doing what they really say they are.
Loophole. Everyone knows it's never been scientific.
This, it's all bullshit.
nice, instead of using money to help out humans in need they'll use it to continue torturing whales.
I was actually speaking with Paul Watson, the Captain and President of the Sea Shepherd the other day, he said that whatever the Yushin Maru throws at them they're going to give their best effort to stop them.
Loophole. Everyone knows it's never been scientific.
So why hasn't anything been done about it?
All of the whaling vessels have watercannons.
Yeah, but they outfitted a whaling ship with a powerful water cannon where the harpoon goes as a defense boat last year. (ignore the speedboat disappearing under its bow)
While I hate Sea Shepherd because they're douchebags who like to think they're awesome and badass for what they do. They're right.
So why hasn't anything been done about it?
Because the governments would rather turn a blind eye to it instead of actually dealing with it. Only now after tons of pressure both local and international is Australia actually starting to get involved. Last year they sued Japan in the International Court of Justice, but I'm not sure if that's doing anything.
Yeah, but they outfitted a whaling ship with a powerful water cannon where the harpoon goes as a defense boat last year. (ignore the speedboat disappearing under its bow)
Oh yeah, forgot about that.
I think this is disgusting. They don't really sell some fish meats like they really do in Japan. They whale because it provides quite a large amount of meat and they repackage it as other meat. Don't even get started with dolphin meat too
Far as I'm concerned, Sea Shepard can do what it wants to those whalers. They are poachers, morally speaking and if they want to do the job we won't, let them. Keeps them out of the hair of the rest of us as well.
Fucking whalers. I honestly hate them for what they do. The ocean is our most valuable resource, and Japan butchers whales and dolphins (don't get me started, that's fucking brutal) yearly. It's a farce, same as rainforest deforestation. There are no products that we need from whales - all of them have alternatives that are better, or equal to the products from whaling, and I think that the meat has insanely high mercury content? (not sure on that one) I'll support Sea Shepherd if it stops them, though I dislike Sea Shepherd for the way that they act.
I don't particularly care for the false dichotomy that's going on here. So if I oppose a group of Japanese whalers that are exploiting a loophole in a decades old piece of legislation to farm whales by the hundred, I must automatically support a group of idiotic people who qualify as ecoterrorists? No. To me, both groups are at fault here, both the whalers and Sea Shepherd.
Don't really like whalers, but I hate those Sea Shepherd hippies a lot more. Poachers are bad, eco-extremist hippies are much worse.
Don't really like whalers, but I hate those Sea Shepherd hippies a lot more. Poachers are bad, eco-extremist hippies are much worse.
I love how they take themselves so seriously, say they're like "pirates" and "badasses" but the worst thing they had done was park their ship in front of whaling vessels "Oh, hory fucking sheet, da See Shepurd!"
Don't really like whalers, but I hate those Sea Shepherd hippies a lot more. Poachers are bad, eco-extremist hippies are much worse.
how are they 'eco-extremist' if they were extremist they'd be doing violent damage in a significant fashion like blowing up whaling ships
nice, instead of using money to help out humans in need they'll use it to continue torturing whales.
I met a Japanese delegate before and he said most of the Tsunami aid money went to other things while their government funded the recovery itself.
I love how they take themselves so seriously, say they're like "pirates" and "badasses" but the worst thing they had done was park their ship in front of whaling vessels "Oh, hory fucking sheet, da See Shepurd!"
Pretty much this, they act like badasses and call themselves "pirates" and then when they're accused of, you know, actual piracy, suddenly they aren't pirates anymore.
Don't really like whalers, but I hate those Sea Shepherd hippies a lot more. Poachers are bad, eco-extremist hippies are much worse.
As long as they don't go eco-terrorist I'm fine with them.

Sea Shepherd does a lot more than harass whalers. They work along side police in the Galapagos islands to stop poachers. They have funded various projects from K9 units to a island-wide radar system that tracks every boat in range. They have a ship on patrol around the islands all year long. If Sea Shepherd is a terrorist group, then the Galapagos islands are terrorists by association. http://www.seashepherd.org/galapagos/ Sea Shepherd had the only non-military helicopter in the Libyan no-fly zone as they worked along with legal fishermen to stop illegal operations. http://www.seashepherd.org/blue-rage-2011/ Look at those terrorist scum! They also had a campaign in the Faroe Islands, and an ongoing Operation in Japan. http://www.seashepherd.org/dolphins/ If Sea Shepherd are terrorists than Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, Christian Bale, Richard Dean Anderson, Martin Sheen, William Shatner, and Marina Sirtis are all terrorists for being on the Board of Advisers. Australian government officials are also terrorists. However, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Shepherd_Conservation_Society_operations ctrl+F "sink" and "ram" You could call them Eco-Terrorists by definition. But they have never injured anyone. (you can search that too). Compared to Greenpeace, ALF, ELF, and PETA, I'd say they are the better of the bunch. They are a Conservation group, not an Environmental group. It's down to opinion, really. [editline]7th December 2011[/editline]
I think this is disgusting. It's high seas. I still think that loophole or not, they have the open seas right (that probably does not exist but it isn't like we've tried to exercise that before) to at least cull off the hippies. A few dozen bullets here and a rocket or two there will thin them out, especially if you leave them swimming. They are about as annoying as panhandlers outside the bottle depot. Edit: I expect a tsunami of boxes for such cynical thinking.

Australia has sued Japan over this. It is not legal.
