Research recently published suggests that the soil from the Martian surface contains about 2% water by weight. CNN for yourself
That sounds like damn little water for serious use considering that it wouldn't be easy at all to get the water out of the soil and efficiently capture it.
Isn't that still quite a bit of water?
Is 2% by weight a lot or no
Two percent by weight? That's pretty significant, considering how barren and dry it was initially thought to be.
CNN for yourself
You get a zingbolt for that clever sourcing. I found the "pints per cubic feet of ground" measurement a lot easier to wrap my head around, since we normally have water as being measured in volumes, not weight.
Each cubic foot of Martian soil contains around two pints of liquid water, though the molecules are not freely accessible, but rather bound to other minerals in the soil.
(source being google: "curiosity water pints"; it seems to be everywhere.)
It's still less water than our earth deserts have!
HEY ASSHOLE, BACK THE FUCK OFF. MARS IS DOING IT'S BEST OK??? Not everyone can be fancy and shit like you, with your water, and cellphones, and color television!

You aren't going to pop a straw into that soil and have a drink, not even if you are bear grills. You would have to mine that soil up in considerate amounts, scorch the living shit out of it, capture all the gasses, and separate the water from the rest. It gonna be massively energy intensive and you will need a pressurized apparatus for the entire thing. It's nice to have some water but this will be far far harder to access than to recycle the water we bring with us over and over and over and over, even if for years, even as it becomes harder and harder to recycle it.

Good for it! Must've been getting thirsty up there.
Is this late? I searched for Curiosity, water, mars, water mars, mars water and found nothing.
I don't think it is regarding this particular article, really, it's just that water has been predicted there for ages and range of tests confirmed it, this is just one another article on something that has been said a plenty of times.
I wonder if they do find some micro-bacteria or something, how big of a deal it would be. At this point, I probably wouldn't be surprised if there was a few feet underground, protected from the radiation and elements. But imagine all the headlines and stuff, it would be crazy. Then 2 hours later Miley Cyrus will do something stupid and everyone will forget.
Until some amazing soil drenching technology comes out we can't do anything.
Guys guys guys.....you know what's in the water usually? bacteria Yeah maybe we can finally find something in there.

Only a fool would think that water can't be found anywhere else except on Earth.
