(Nov. 2) -- Over the past month, Ugandan newspaper Rolling Stone (not associated with the U.S. magazine of the same name) has caused international outrage by publishing the names, photographs and addresses of alleged gays and lesbians and calling for their execution.
Now a High Court judge in the capital Kampala has banned that upstart weekly -- which has a circulation of just 2,000 and was founded in August -- from publishing the personal details of anyone "perceived by the respondents to be gay, lesbian, or homosexual in general." The head of local gay rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda, which filed the original invasion-of-privacy lawsuit against Rolling Stone, praised Monday's decision by Justice Musoke Kibuuka.
"Justice has been served," Frank Mugisha, the organization's chairman, told British daily The Guardian. "This should be a reminder to the media not to incite violence against minority groups in this country."
The court order came just a day after the paper printed a list of 14 men it claimed were "generals" in Uganda's gay movement. In a piece headlined "Men of Shame Part II," the newspaper's editor, Giles Muhame, wrote that the "heartless homosexuals" were "seriously recruiting and brainwashing unsuspecting kids into gay circles."
That article was a follow-up to a front-page story that ran in Rolling Stone in early October. Titled "100 Pictures of Uganda's Top Homos Leak," the piece featured photographs of 100 alleged homosexuals alongside a yellow banner reading "Hang Them." Although the newspaper has an extremely low circulation, as talk of Rolling Stone's supposed revelations spread, so did a wave of homophobic violence.
Stosh Mugisha, who was identified as a lesbian in that article, were forced to flee her Kampala home together with her partner after they were attacked by an angry mob. "People were throwing stones through the gate," she told CNN. 'They were shouting, 'Homosexual, homosexual!'" Human rights groups have said that at least four more gay men have been attacked since the article hit the streets.
Although editor Muhame has succeeded in stirring up anti-gay anger with his inflammatory articles, he admitted during an interview with Agence France-Presse that he had no proof that anyone named in his paper had tried to convert young people to homosexuality. "They published their pictures on a gay networking website, so that was enough evidence for us," he told the news agency.
Rolling Stone's hate campaign has the support of many members of this deeply conservative Christian nation, where gays and lesbians are forced to hide their identity or risk discrimination, violence or jail. "The moment you come out as a homosexual, you start living a dangerous existence," Sexual Minorities Uganda chairman Mugisha told AOL News earlier this year. "People won't talk to you, police harass you and you could be beaten up in the street."
Under Ugandan law, anyone found guilty of being a homosexual can be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison, and last year a Ugandan parliamentarian -- with the alleged help of American evangelical preachers -- attempted to introduce a bill that would see some homosexual acts punished with death. Facing intense pressure from Western aid donors, President Yoweri Museveni, who regularly condemns homosexuality as a Western vice, eventually sidelined the legislation.
David Bahati, the lawmaker behind that contentious policy, has declared that the law will be passed as soon Uganda becomes less dependent on foreign aid. "We are very confident," Bahati told CNN, "because this is a piece of legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional family here in Africa, and also protect the future of our children." Much of the population is behind him. According to a recent survey by the U.S.-based Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, 64 percent of Ugandans want the Bible made the law of the land, and 79 percent believe homosexuality is morally wrong.
Uganda's High Court is set to re-examine the Rolling Stone ban on Nov. 23. But no matter what verdict is reached, editor Muhame has pledged to continue his campaign. "We will publish more pictures but in a diplomatic way, so that we can dodge the law," he told AFP. "We might not name them as homos, but the public will know what they are."
Good to know someone is looking out for their rights.
I don't see how being homosexual makes such a big problem. Whats wrong with it?

That's what I ask myself daily, why does it matter if a man loves a man, or if a woman loves another woman? Why is it SO bad? Who one loves should not be subject to harassment and murder.
That country must have the most hardcore, most deeply-closeted homosexuals ever.
They think gay "eat their poopoo"

You can do both if you like.
I don't mind gays as long as one doesn't hit on me.
Don't worry, I don't think you will ever have to worry about that.
I don't mind gays as long as one doesn't hit on me.
Oh dear god someone hit on me
I could just as easily say "I'm not gay" but I'm going to get ~~~ANGSty~~~~* over it
I spent several months in Uganda as a missionary and I must say that these homosexuals are truly a blight on an otherwise wonderful, God-fearing country. It is stated in scripture that any man who lays with another man must be put to death and to ban what this heroic newspaper is doing is to directly defy scripture. Hopefully the government comes to their senses quickly so Uganda can be rid of this terrible plague.
They eat da poopoo

People like you are idiots. Gays aren't going to hit on you, they're people too - they can show some constraint.

Most I've met don't.
They seem to have a need to show everyone that they are gay.
I'm sure there is respectful people out there though.

Uganda has more problems than that, which is why this article doesn't surprise me

Honestly, we shouldn't even be seeing stupid posts like this about how gays are a certain stereotypical way that they're not really at all.

Good job generalizing a lot of people. Yeah guys! Them gays are all trying to hit on you!
Because of homophobia, most gays don't come out of the closet, and would never dare hit on a male.

One should ask themselves important questions every day. It's not strange.
One should ask themselves important questions every day. It's not strange.
the question i ask myself every day is why do all liberals have to act like self righteous dicks
the question i ask myself every day is why do all liberals have to act like self righteous dicks
Conservatives tend to be even more self righteous (but one should not say that, it's generalization).
