• A man has done 21 years on a life without parole sentence for non-violent marijuana charges
Efforts to free Jeff Mizanskey, Missouri's only prisoner serving life without parole for marijuana charges, are continuing with an online fundraiser that seeks to raise money for a media blitz that would aim to persuade Gov. Jay Nixon to grant clemency. The goal of the Indiegogo campaign is to raise $21,000 - a symbolic amount to represent the 21 years that Mizanskey has been imprisoned - for a series of ads for print, radio, TV, online, and billboards. The radio and TV ads will feature Mizanskey himself. In that statement, Mizanskey says he had just learned that he has a great grandchild on the way and he'd like to be a part of his or her life. "I just pray I can be there for my great grandchild. As you all know, I could not be there for my grandkids. With all of your help, that's possible," Mizanskey told Daily RFT. Malin says that he hopes this message will resonate with the public and the governor. But he also hopes that Nixon will see a chance to get on board with what many see as a political sea change on marijuana laws. this country's judicial system is insane sometimes
Regardless of your position on the weed debate, this is fucked in every way possible.
Like it's gonna change anything.
Thank god this violent rapist was locked up so he can't prowl the stree...wait, life in prison for weed charges? Missouri, are you sure you know who the one with the dope actually is here?
even if he's released at this point, he has still lost 1/4 of his life in there, undeserved. I don't think there's anything else worse to lose than years of your life this is completely unjustified and someone should stand responsible for taking such a large portion of someones life away
I'm all for the criminalisation of cannabis, but this is far more than overkill. 21 years for this is beyond insane.
Indiegogo campaign has been running for 10 days has raid $527 for a worth while cause. Potato salad campaign in the same time raid $46,000. World is fucking retarded
I'm all for the criminalisation of cannabis, but this is far more than overkill. 21 years for this is beyond insane.
He should be stoned instead.
I'm all for the criminalisation of cannabis, but this is far more than overkill. 21 years for this is beyond insane.
Why? Legitimate question, why do you think weed should stay illegal?
This is terrible. As an apology, after they release him, the Missouri government should supply him with a lifetime amount of weed.
This guy's from my state. There's a pretty big movement to try to get him out of jail, but surprise surprise, there isn't much response from our state government. There's even billboards dotting the major interstates demanding his release. No one deserves to be kidnapped and thrown in a cage over a fucking plant, I don't care what plant it is.
He didn't get life in prison for pot, he got it as a three time felony offender(ie three strikes law). I hate when people misrepresent the case.
I'm all for the criminalisation of cannabis, but this is far more than overkill.
nerd
He didn't get life in prison for pot, he got it as a three time felony offender(ie three strikes law). I hate when people misrepresent the case.
That doesn't make it any better. Three strike laws are an embarrassment to our entire judicial system, just as bad as our policies on cannabis.
He didn't get life in prison for pot, he got it as a three time felony offender(ie three strikes law). I hate when people misrepresent the case.
Three strikes laws mean going to prison for 25+ years on the taxpayer's dime over 6 stolen VHS tapes. We can have a conversation about how monumentally retarded zero-tolerance mandatory sentencing is, if you'd like.
Can $21,000 really buy TV ads?
this country's judicial system is insane sometimes
It's entirely broken to put it nicely. It's a mockery of what it should be.
this country's judicial system is insane sometimes
Regularily.
Can $21,000 really buy TV ads?
A lot less can you get you TV ads. It just depends on the network and broadcast time / duration of ads.
That doesn't make it any better. Three strike laws are an embarrassment to our entire judicial system, just as bad as our policies on cannabis.
I agree, but this guy still wasn't given life in prison for pot, so there is no reason to phrase it that way.
I think of our government as this sometimes.
Well, that's just ridiculous. It's nice to see that people are getting him some money to help make up for this injustice... it's too bad money can't put 21 wasted years back into your life though. This country's legal system, like most of its other systems... is insane.
I agree, but this guy still wasn't given life in prison for pot, so there is no reason to phrase it that way.
Do you know what his three strikes were? The article doesn't make any mention of it.
No non violent crime should ever receive sentencing even close to this.
Do you know what his three strikes were? The article doesn't make any mention of it.
No, but another article on this guy said that when he went in front of the judge for the pot thing the judge specifically mentioned the three time felon law in sentencing. So he would have got life if they caught him for any felony, this sentence was not specific to pot charges only.
"Text 'JEFF' to 420420" Are you joking
"I'm in for life for brutally murdering my wife with a hammer, you?" "Hit the blunt"
On one hand, the law was stupid, but it was still the law at the time and he broke it and accepted those consequences. That being said, the law was stupid.
He didn't get life in prison for pot, he got it as a three time felony offender(ie three strikes law). I hate when people misrepresent the case.
This doesn't change anything. 3 strikes laws are just as stupid as a man being imprisoned for life because of marijuana. There's a reason why progressive states already got rid of them or are in the process of getting rid of them. Our entire judicial system is just completely fucked. Everything from the ridiculous laws that get people imprisoned to the horrible prisons themselves.
