[release]CHINA HAS declared its intention to land an astronaut on the moon in the first official confirmation of its aim to go where Americans last set foot nearly 40 years ago.Chinese scientists have discussed the possibility of a manned lunar mission but a white paper published yesterday is the first public government document to enshrine it as a policy goal.
China will “conduct studies on the preliminary plan for a human lunar landing”, it said.
A manned moon mission is still some time off – Chinese experts say after 2020 – but the statement highlights Beijing’s soaring ambitions just five months after the US retired its space shuttle programme.
“Chinese people are the same as people around the world,” Zhang Wei, an official with China’s National Space Administration, said at a briefing. “When looking up at the starry sky, we are full of longing and yearning for the vast universe.”
According to the white paper, which serves as a blueprint for the next five years, China will develop new satellites, accelerate efforts to build a space station and strengthen its research in space.[/release]

During the cold war the space race was mostly fueled by the fact that they wanted to put weapons and all sorts of spy-satellites in space. Now there is no need, so I doubt it. But I'm glad China's taking initiative here.

Well the Soviets/Russians have never actually landed people on the moon, so the Chinese can still beat them to it.
Here's hoping this causes Washington to pull funding from TSA and dump it into NASA. We've done it once, we can do it again, let's do it!

I have never understood why they havent created a small moonbase or something. I mean, surely its a good place to test out a self-sustaining base away from Earth, where they can also observe/research and gather samples of things easier, because, well they are pretty much in space.
It would be funny if they made a video of them throwing the American flag off into space and planting the Chinese one in its place. :v:

Some good news at last, China needs to succeed not for their country, but for humanity.
Finally, it's about time someone went back to the moon, or space in general, nowadays we are losing sight of what's important, because too often we forget we are just a tiny little insignificant planet in a massive galaxy, in which there are most likely other life forms. We are too caught up in comparatively small things.
