SINGAPORE - An Irish woman who worked in Singapore as a physiotherapist has been declared brain dead after she collapsed during a trekking holiday to Indonesia. The family of 22-year-old Lisa Orsi said on Friday that her organs will be donated in accordance with her wishes. She was officially declared brain dead on Thursday.
Her father Dennis said: "She would really want as many of her organs used to help as many people as possible.
"She was very determined that if anything bad ever happened, organ donation would be very high up the list. But we didn't realise it would happen before she was 23."
Ms Orsi was on a four-day trip to Indonesia with a group of friends. She lost consciousness after hiking up a volcano, and was first warded in a hospital in Surabaya.
She was diagnosed as having suffered severe brain damage from hypoxia - or a lack of oxygen - and moved to Singapore General Hospital on Feb 25.
"I realised the situation was very bleak and that things were not going to improve," said Mr Orsi, 46.
He added that Ms Orsi was put on mechanical ventilation as she could not breathe on her own. She did not regain consciousness.
Her father painted a picture of an active, independent young woman who was very close to her family.
"She had a massive appetite for seeing things and travelling," he recalled.
This felt pretty sad, and when I first heard the news, I got fucking worried, because I have an Irish friend, working in a hospital here as well, and she was on vacation in Indonesia around the same time as well. Turns out, this lady was her friend. Still, pretty damn saddening this happened to such a young person.

how does this happen
Aneurism/stroke
It sounds like she had a problem with the atmosphere around the volcano.

oh yeah that's obvious
i just had the mental image that she flopped down to the ground and got brain dead

Aneurysms are scary to think about. At any time, a vessel in your brain can pop and that's it. Youre done. Happens to even healthy people.

Aren't people who aren't used to such altitudes supposed to undergo training in order to prevent this?
You don't just go jostling up a mountain, your hemoglobin needs time to acclimate.
Holy shit, I've heard of altitude sickness but never someone dying (essentially) because of it.

Training not really, you just have to ease your way up. You're supposed to go a thousand feet or so then stay there for a day or two. Don't quote me on that though, I'm basing that off of a 7 year old memory of hiking in the Rockies

My grandfather died this way, and he was a completely healthy 42 year old man, didn't drink, didn't smoke. Just one day he went to work and had an aneurysm at his desk, and that was the end of him.
Pretty scary shit.
