He really needs to put out more content like this. I love watching him screw around as much as the next guy, but I really enjoy the insights he has on games as a whole.
Currently playing through Doom (2016) on Nightmare difficulty which is alot of fun. It's challenging but not downright unfair, it can get difficult at times. It's nice to see videos like this from Dunkey though.
i agree with him entirely. i just recently picked up fire emblem fates conquesr and i found myself not finding a good difficulty medium. playing on hard is far too punishing for me to find it enjoyable and normal is too easy. great video i knew exactly where he was going when he kept showing league footage
"The covenant are putting up a real fight" :v:
Reminds me of when I beat God Hand and thought "That was a lot of fun! I think I'll give hard mode a try" and hard mode was so fucking ridiculous that I died to the first group of enemies in like 5 seconds.
It's funny how you meet completely new people sometimes and despite all your differences you still have the common topic of how grenade spam is fucking bs in Cod WaW
Kirby's Epic Yarn is a good game that is not bad because there is no permadeath.
Devil may cry 3 (the "what the fuck" end of his difficulty scale) was amazing and one of my favourite games, but because you had to beat each difficulty to unlock the next it was never really too jarring IMO. Unless you're just playing a game with actual difficulty for the first time, in which case you're going to get fucked sideways on the first couple of bosses and you get to enjoy the cheeky game giving you easy mode as an unlock v:v:v

The original American release was the "what the fuck" difficulty.
Did you play the original or the special edition? Wasn't aware that there was a difficulty difference but looking it up it seems that there wasn't any relevant one really (" SE's Normal and Hard corresponds to Easy and Normal in the US version. However, Very Hard and DMD remain as hard as they ever were. "). I mean I beat all the difficulties and bosses without items, so SE or not doesn't matter too much.

But think about the people who started with DMC3 and were thrown straight into hard mode. Once they got to Cerberus a lot of them are going to go "what the fuck is this difficulty"
the mass effect insanity difficulty is so perfect. It's so fun playing without being ridiculous. I also really enjoy the witcher 3 and its second to hardest difficulty.
I play everything on easy or medium because I get way more enjoyment out of it. I don't even want to do the same part twice, why would I bother doing it 1000x times?
I was hoping he would bring up Resident Evil 4. That game is the king of difficulty balance IMO - first play through, you'll beat it, but you'll almost never have more than a handful of bullets and half of your health bar at any given time. Incredibly tense and enormously rewarding.
"The covenant are putting up a real fight" :v:
On a side note, there's no way that clip is him playing on Heroic. Needler shots do more damage on a higher difficulty as that.

I have to say the early Call of Dutys did this very badly. You had hardened, which could be a challenge as you wouldn't need more than a few shots to go down and with the healthpack system you were sometimes a toe stub from dying unless you could find a healthpack. Veteran did away with the healthpacks, so now you're vulnerable and all damage you take throughout the mission is cumulative, meaning you can only get hit a few times every mission.

It made me feel like the badass commander Shepard is suppose to be.
It's funny how you meet completely new people sometimes and despite all your differences you still have the common topic of how grenade spam is fucking bs in Cod WaW
If I remember correctly, Veteran difficulty had coding that told the AI to spam shitloads of nades at you if you stayed still for longer than 3 seconds
On a side note, there's no way that clip is him playing on Heroic. Needler shots do more damage on a higher difficulty as that.
He's definitely playing on easy in the 'Heroic' clips. The aliens have a severely reduced rate of fire and barely do any damage on easy, while they're fairly aggressive on Heroic. The grunts would never fire 1 needle at a time like that on Heroic, on Heroic they tend to use 3 round bursts and fire more rapidly. Though he was obviously using easy mode for the heroic bits to exaggerate the difference and emphasis how ball bustingly hard Legendary is.
i beat halo 1 legendary in co op
Bitch puhlease, I beat Halo Reach on Legendary solo. Before that I never hated the words "Elite Zealot".
ME2 on insanity was a blast for me, it made me strategize and use my companions abilities to there maximum effect. It made me feel like the badass commander Shepard is suppose to be.
Yup. Only somewhat issue is it peaks pretty early on in the game. The first time you're on the collector base, the ambush, is easily the hardest part of the game on Insanity. If you can get through that part, you're pretty much set for the rest of the game without too many issues. It reminds me of the Monsoon fight in MGR:R. If you don't know how to parry well, he will force you to learn (at higher difficulties). After his fight, you should pretty damn set on parrying. First collector base ambush in ME2 teaches you how important every element is, from squad member selection and point allocation, to weapon and upgrade choice, as well as how to time power use so there's never a power not being used and they are always combining with each other. Basically, how to micro-manage the fuck out of your squadmates. Conquer that and you'll be set for the rest of the game.
Dunkey is really damn articulate. His more serious videos are a lot more impressive than his goofy shit
the worst game to do this in recent memory is XCOM2. the game is incredible and enjoyable, but fuck me does the difficulty either sway balls to the wall hard on normal, or piss easy on easy. normal your hit chance with rookies is like 60-70% but on easy its always around 80%. the game just feels terrible when its literally just decreasing your rolls instead of making the AI smarter.

On lower difficulties they'll commonly not take paths they can very obviously take to do things like flank your soldiers. There is also less use of grenades and AOE attacks. There's actually a ton of underlying mechanics in how things are processed. On every difficulty both you and the aliens are given hidden modifiers per turn, depending on how each turn plays out. I don't recall the exact numbers, but basically aim stats are buffed or nerfed. If you miss three shots in a row, the aliens will suffer a hidden aim penalty and the next turn, you gain a hidden aim buff. That's a really small slice of the underlying mechanics, but I think it works really well. The game boils more down to how well you position your soldiers, who you have available with what abilities, and who to best situate where in a given circumstance. XCOM is more about risk management and damage control and incorporating those elements into a strategy. Even though the game is based on pre-defined dice rolls, you can still game the system if you understand how the system works. And it doesn't boil down to breaking the game or cheesing bullshit, it's just gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanics and bending them to your advantage. If you want to talk about actual bullshit, let's talk about the Dodge mechanic. Because XCOM needed more bullshit, they added in a hidden stat for dodge where a full damage instakill crit can only do 2 or 3 damage. Fuck you Jake Solomon. Or Stun Lancers running out from deep within the fog of war and knocking out someone they shouldn't have been able to even see. Or the Chryssalids! Oh god, the Chryssalids. Stun lancers on cocaine and PCP. Fuck them. I hate them. [editline]5th August 2016[/editline] Classic is the ideal difficulty in my opinion and it feels like the real difficulty the game was balanced around (in fact, according to MANY ini files, it is what the devs built around). Impossible should be changed to masochism.
