• GEMA made an agreement with Youtube
GEMA had long argued that YouTube should pay for copyrighted music on the site while YouTube countered that it could not be held responsible for all content posted. But on Tuesday morning, that annoying red emoji face that used to show up on blocked videos had been removed, after the two groups found a resolution, a GEMA spokeswoman told DPA. The block will only continue for artists who are not part of GEMA and assert other rights. Thanks to the agreement, artists who are members of GEMA will also be paid for YouTube videos. The new agreement will even apply retroactively back to 2009, when a previous license agreement expired and the battle began.
I think I speak for a lot of Germans when I say :joy:
I have mixed feelings about this. I am happy that german user are now able to enjoy music and music videos but I am not sure how to feel about Youtube giving in to GEMA's demands.
fucking finally, i can shill my music to germans without having to wrestle with GEMA
Yay! I don't have to use that proxy app anymore! But can someone explain this:
The block will only continue for artists who are not part of GEMA
Why would artists who are not part of GEMA still be blocked? What if I make a video about playing a guitar and singing a self made song and put it on youtube? Will that be blocked?
I have mixed feelings about this. I am happy that german user are now able to enjoy music and music videos but I am not sure how to feel about Youtube giving in to GEMA's demands.
I wonder if they really did, or if they arrived at a resolution trading lower long-term fees for those retroactive payments. (For anyone not from here: The situation in Germany with the GEMA is pretty ridiculous, in that if you play music (semi-)publicly or use (most kinds of) music commercially, you have to prove that you didn't use anything licensed to/by them by sending them a detailed track list according to the GEMA-Vermutung (GEMA presumption). It goes completely against the normal burden of proof principle. The organisation also doesn't let artists release any of their works for free if they're a member.) For example, if someone copies your song you too can go through YouTube's copyright violation system to have it taken down (or have the video's ad revenue redirected to you iinm).
And I truly am pumped for you folks.
About fuuuucking time, holy shit I can finally ditch this proxy crap
For example, if someone copies your song you too can go through YouTube's copyright violation system to have it taken down (or have the video's ad revenue redirected to you iinm).
I'd rather just redirect the revenue than take the other persons video down. Eventually they'll get the message :v:
This is insane
