After initially denying it, Apple has acknowledged the iPhone 5's purple flare camera problem in an email to a Gizmodo reader. Their solution: "Angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures."
Here's their complete answer:
Dear Matt,
Our engineering team just gave me this information and we recommend that you angle the camera away from the bright light source when taking pictures. The purple flare in the image provided is considered normal behavior for iPhone 5's camera. If you wish to reach me regarding this case number *********, please contact me at 1-877-***-**** ext. *******. I currently work Thursday-Monday: 7:00am - 3:30pm Mountain Time. If you reach my voicemail, please leave your name, phone number, case number and the best time to reach you. Email is ***********@apple.com.
Sincerely,
Debby

Long time Gizmodo reader Matt Van Gastel received this email after a long call with Apple support regarding the Purple Flare problem in his phone, which apparently is a feature common to every iPhone 5:
Initially I was told that it shouldn't happen and that it is strange. My call was escalated to a senior support individual who again said it was odd and shouldn't happen. I sent her some pics of the issue and she in turn sent them to the engineering team.

So it is final, folks: Apple says that, if your photos have a purple flare, this is totally normal behavior of the iPhone 5's camera. You are just holding it wrong.
Also, it's not Apple's fault that the Sun is purple. [Thanks Matt!]

We peons can only try to imagine the brilliance that is apple.
"it's a feature"
Reasons why I'm still waiting to upgrade my phone, the first few models always have issues
Awesome, integrated Instagram!
Looks like the new iPhone finally got the JJ Abrams filter
needs more filters 0/10 would not reblog
Well, at least it's not something that cripples the features of
you know,
the phone.
the phone part of the iPhone
like last time.
How does that fly past the quality control guys, though?
How do you even fuck that up
I'm pretty sure the technology behind taking photographs isn't new or experimental
they basically just put a fucked up IR filter over the sensor
More reasons not to buy apple products. You pay exorbitant prices only to get fucked in the ass.
Last time I was told by a manufacturer to not aim the camera at a light source, we were still using Trinicon tubes.
You'd think after six different versions of the same phone they would've figured out the camera, eh?
apple figured they needed to "Innovate" with their camera
so, they did the typical "MORE MEGAPIXELS" crap, alongside with some other minor changes

This is the 6th model and it still has a shit ton of stupid issues.

It's almost like you don't know what you're talking about.

Same could be said about the team behind QC of the iPhone 5's camera.
Obviously Apple are doing this on purpose to get people to start using cameras again and wanting people to learn how to use Photoshop.
The weird thing is that this is largely the same camera as the 4S'. It doesn't make a lot of sense.
Apparently, Apple's excuse to all of their mistakes is simply "It's a feature" or "That's perfectly normal" now
hoping for the people who bought it that it's fixable easily, that'd suck for them
Pretty sure it's because of the newfangled Sapphire lens.
The reply was from Engineering, which is what "Senior Advisors" (IE: Who this Deb person is) refer to as Site Support Engineering. Basically, three guys for one region (One for iPhone/iPad, one for iPods and another for Macs) that sit on their arse and eat doughnuts all day.
They're by all means idiots and the reply of "expected behaviour" is totally not surprising. They're the sort of people who say "RTFM" when you've just quoted step by step the the part of the manual that pertains to the exact issue on hand and the exact outcome of each step.
It sucks, but at least it doesn't entirely ruin the image?
I don't know, I think my opinion would be different if I dropped whatever amount of money to buy one of those.

I've had better help from a HP support center, even though the guy had a thick indian accent.
Wow jeez, this is really putting me off from buying my first iphone(which would be the iphone 5(I also have my reasons for buying it, so please don't label me as one of those sheep who has to get because apple said so)). I guess I should look into the Nokia Lumia 920, or wait to see if Apple will release a fix first.
I thought there was no right or wrong way to hold an apple product.
I thought there was no right or wrong way to hold an apple product.
It's mostly in reference to whichever iteration of the iPhone was getting bad reception because people were apparently holding it wrong (also the way that was most comfortable for most people) and they said "it's fine, you're holding it wrong."
hoping for the people who bought it that it's fixable easily, that'd suck for them
If it is a problem with the IR filter like somebody here said a new filter should resolve the problem.
I didn't manage to get it at launch, and I'm kinda starting to wonder if that was God who gave me a hand there, 'cause I'm seriously considering not getting it.
Easily scratchable(like.. REALLY easily), camera problems, and the shitty new Apple maps..
Maybe it is time to try something else, I am getting tired of the post-launch problems people dicscover everytime a new iPhone comes out.
If you're dissapointed with it every time a new one comes out why the hell do you come back for more?
This is the 6th model and it still has a shit ton of stupid issues.
Actually the 8th if you count the 3G and the 3GS as their own version.
