imo he spends way too much time on jokes.
His jokes are very formulaic. It's the serious stuff where he shines.
The jokes are the reason the show exists. I think as much as you might prefer the serious issues, it's the jokes that make them digestible, and makes the content watchable. It's equally a part of of the pacing, where he gets deep in to a topic that educates you and lets you know the serious ramifications, and then pulls you back, giving the audience a chance to breathe. I'm open to being wrong but I don't think his show would exist the way it does if it didn't have comedy. That said, criticize them not being good jokes all you want.
His jokes are very hit and miss, but when he goes over the top with things there some element of childlike joy that goes very well with this fever-dream of a timeline we find ourselves in.

That is why I appreciate the jokes being there, even if I don't find them all humorous. Oliver rarely gets more than chuckle out of me, and often not even a smirk, but I still appreciate the jokes being there, and honestly I wouldn't watch him if the deliver was just raw content.
His jokes are very formulaic.
True, it's [reference material] > [serious comment] > [comparison with unrelated, random stuff] > repeat until finished.
The specific example I'm looking at is when he mentions Taco Bell. The comparison to Taco Bell is good enough; I didn't think he needed to deviate to the chicken taco commercial.

Just make it short and sweet. If a joke doesn't work, it's no problem because you're already moving on to the next one.
