His vocals sure changed when he reached into puberty. Here's a timeline of how his voice changed from 1983-2008.
he had already been through puberty when he recorded kill em all though? this is a pretty skewed comparison anyways, like why include clean vocals from master of puppets whereas shouting vocals from the rest of the 80's albums and also if you didnt know, during the massive ass black album tour, james lost his voice and had to relearn how to sing, which is why he sounds completely different cause he had to retrain his vocal chords for it and sang a lot softer thereafter. that, and alcohol
I see. But there's still a large difference from Kill Em All to Black Album. James was alot more screechy in '83 if you catch my drift.
this vid makes the one big mistake of leaving out the early demos because that is the real pre-voice break James

By Death Magnetic he's back to how he sounded on the Black Album imo.

I personally preferred James's voice around the MOP album through to the load album, death magnetic is p good too.
I want to thank this video for reminding me that St. Anger exists...
88-89 hetfield is best hetfield, especially live
Hey you know what ? Garage Inc. had some of his best vocal achievements IMO. Mercyful fate is one of their best vocal wise.
The first album was also sped up slightly which bumped the pitch up a tiny bit
Found this clip of live performances of "For Whom The Bell Tolls. Incredible performances during the late 80's. Also starting at 6.10, you can hear his voice is damaged at that point.

It's insane, his pre-injury voice is a goddamned musical wonder -- and I'm deeply saddened that it's lost forever.

I saw them last summer, and I am pretty sure his voice is better now than 2010.

His prime was definitly 88-91. He sounded way to screechy to me from 81-88.
Pretty sure his voice got lowered by heavy drinking.
