Warning: This is a 45 minute long video. Please note the appreciation part. When he says that the popularity of Minidisc varied from region to region he wasn't joking. Weather you are surprised or not, I still use Minidisc daily.
My dad loved minidisks. We still have two of those red sony walkmans and some accessories around. I remember I made a, I guess they're called mixtape(?) of some music I used to like a long time ago.
I honestly wish he would do these longer videos more often, I know it's a pain to research all of this stuff and I know I'll never get to use any of this information but I still love listening to him prattling on about this stuff - whenever he posts a sub-10-minute video I get sad. I'd pay money for a little wired clip-on remote like that for my phone. Physical controls, backlight, two-line monochrome dot matrix display, headphone plug. A smartwatch just won't do, it's just another battery to worry about.
Wow, minidisk look like something that would be used in a "20-minutes in the future" sci-fi cyberpunk setting. They look pretty dang durable, would be cool to have a modern version with high-capacity. I know blu-rays don't scratch easily either but a mini-disk seems like it would last forever.
Uh, wow. I feel stupid for thinking "MiniDisc" just referred to 8cm CDs.

Minidiscs were functionally very much a successor to cassette tapes. I've never had a Minidisc player, but the tech behind it is quite fascinating.
I bought a Minidisc player about 3 years ago out of curiosity about the format. Played with it a bit to learn how it worked. About a year later my phone broke and I was left using an older, crappy smartphone. At the time I was going to work an 8 hour job outdoors and the idea of doing it without music was unpleasant. I dug out the MiniDisc player and recorded some music onto it. The phone battery gave out about 1 hour into the shift. I listened to the MiniDisc player for the rest of it, it lasted the whole time on one AA battery. The battery indicator only fell to 2/3 at the very end. I was super impressed.
I still use minidiscs at work. They're super easy to use and I wish I had a player at my house.
