"It's no different than if someone impersonated a cop,". "It's dangerous and I think (if found guilty) he should get some form of punishment."

Gervais is charged with one count each of personating a public officer, personating a public officer (misleading use of badge, uniform), unlawful use of military uniforms and unlawful use of military decoration. He appears in court on Dec. 9.
**SOURCE**
-snip misinformed and stuff-
Can any Canadians tell me about the most obvious signs (in reference to his uniform) that were signals he was stealing valor?
Can any Canadians tell me about the most obvious signs (in reference to his uniform) that were signals he was stealing valor?
One obvious sign is the beard, you're not allowed to have facial hair like that while in uniform in the military.
Keep in mind if this happened in the states he'd get away with it because muh freedom of speech
I don't know about that, people in the US really dislike people who impersonate armed forces personnel. I remember not so long ago there was an upset because someone was dressed in proper uniform for some commemorative reason I can't remember, and people gave them a LOT of shit for it. Now I don't know if it's explicitly illegal, but I'd have to imagine it is for the same reasons it is here.
Keep in mind if this happened in the states he'd get away with it because muh freedom of speech

Whoever, in any place within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the Canal Zone, without authority, wears the uniform or a distinctive part thereof or anything similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of any of the armed forces of the United States, Public Health Service or any auxiliary of such, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Keep in mind if this happened in the states he'd get away with it because muh freedom of speech
Stolen Valor is illegal.
It was illegal under the stolen valor act, however the Supreme Court ruled it a violation of the 1st amendment. Which it was. Technically. Not to say that people wouldn't crucify you for doing it, they just can't arrest you for it.
I think stolen valor applies only to medals and awards - it's still illegal to impersonate a soldier under 18 U.S. Code § 702, I posted it above.
One obvious sign is the beard, you're not allowed to have facial hair like that while in uniform in the military.
You can if it is for special reasons, like religion IIRC.
You can if it is for special reasons, like religion IIRC.
Yeah also means you can wear a turban if you're a Sikh and that sort of thing
You know, for how much I love our military, and the fact my dad is in the forces, I cannot point out anything wrong with the uniform. It seems a bit dark I think. I'm sure there is a list out there somewhere of what's wrong with his outfit
Stolen valor should be treated the same way it is up here imo, just saying
As long as you're not saying "im a soldier, buy me shit" then you're good. If you are walking around saying "im a soldier, buy me shit" you're in violation of the law. But as long as you're not getting any tangible/monetary benefit you're OK.. still a shitbag, but OK.
I don't think it's legal. There's more on this here. Impersonation of any officer or employee of the government is a criminal offense. I'm going to repost 18 U.S. Code § 702:
18 U.S. Code § 702]Whoever, in any place within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the Canal Zone, without authority, wears the uniform or a distinctive part thereof or anything similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of any of the armed forces of the United States, Public Health Service or any auxiliary of such, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.
Here is an article that says what is wrong with his uniform http://m.thestar.com/#/article/news/canada/2014/11/13/remembrance_day_hoax_clues_that_franck_gervais_was_no_military_man.html
I think you should be arrested for trying to act as a military officer in some official function (like trying to do things an officer could), but I don't think just dressing up should be arrestable. He's not hurting anyone
The dude seems to have terrible judgment and I can't imagine what he was thinking. Especially doing it in Ottawa on Remembrance day. He's already lost his job and basically ruined his life from now on. Seems like he's either a total idiot or has some kind of mental issue.
Idk, I remember hearing a while back that stolen valor was challenged in court and the judge basically said that he can't charge the guy because it's protected under free speech, or some bullshit like that.
Unfortunately, angry people without self control wont care about the law if they see you on the street until after they lose their shit.
Yeah I've never understood why it seems like all of these guys get ribbons and medals out the ass and then dare to show up to things like remembrance day ceremonies where they're most likely to get called out.
Keep in mind if this happened in the states he'd get away with it because muh freedom of speech
What kind of comment is this? He seriously wouldn't anyways. Impersonating a military official and stealing valor are incredibly illegal.
What kind of comment is this? He seriously wouldn't anyways. Impersonating a military official and stealing valor are incredibly illegal.
A dumb one. But yeah this is pretty disgraceful, especially on Remembrance Day. What a joker.
Sorry for sounding dumb and stuff, I was just under the impression that stolen valor was legal in the US because of the supreme court ruling that ilikecorn mentioned earlier.
If you're going to fake being a solider, don't fake being someone important. Be some fucking boot with like 2 ribbons. Tell them you went to boot camp and specialty school and now you're waiting to attach to a unit. Or.. you know.. don't lie.
Yeah, there's definitely a difference between dressing up as a unitless soldier for the sake of dressing up (cosplaying, larping, etc) but dressing up as a member of a specific unit (101st, etc) WITH the associated medals (essentially saying 'I have done all the things and made the sacrifices to earn these medals) is despicable
You should had seen some of the US imposters. I mean, they went full retard, they didn't even try to hide it. Its extremely obvious. Like these: [t]http://assets.nydailynews.com/polopoly_fs/1.1877396.1406138497!/img/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/article_970/fakesergeant24n-4-web.jpg[/t] Like come on, if you want to try fake it, at least have some fucking common sense. My officer told us how he had one guy who was in Logistics, and yet he had an airborne badge. They found out, and stripped him of his rank, he was on an officer course.

I cannot comprehend why people do this. Do they seriously think it makes them cool?
I cannot comprehend why people do this. Do they seriously think it makes them cool?
Probably so they can forge some respect they didn't get when they were kids/younger.
I've read this one interview with a N.G. Berrill, a forensic psychologist and executive director of the New York Center for Neuropsychology & Forensic Behavioural Science., which is a fancy title to Say whatever the fuck you want under the flag of Freudian Psychoanalysis terms and he basically stated that:
"And I don’t think they have the capacity, psychologically, to really consider those issues, because as part of the depression I’d also say there’s an infantile narcissism. Meaning, like babies, like young infants, they’re trying to be gratified through these acts."
But then again, this is CBC's website and they're looking for any kind of excuse to fuck up an interview in Remembrance Day. So, I'm eager to hear from Franck Gervais himself why the fuck he went through with this since
He appears in court on Dec. 9.
Might end up with a good practical joke.
Turns out that I saw this guy when I was downtown at the war memorial for the ceremony. I just don't get why someone would go to those lengths.
