As the latest round of fashion shows kick off in the capital, a very different kind of fashion event is roaring into life in east London. In a loud and crowded venue in Shoreditch, designers, models and bloggers from around the country gather to celebrate the inaugural Official London Plus Size fashion weekend (LPSFW), two days of catwalk shows dedicated solely to larger women.
It is the first event of its kind in the UK, and one which couldn't come soon enough for the women in attendance. Jo Swinson, minister for women and equalities, opened the weekend with a speech which suggested the fashion industry could learn from such an event.
"Twice a year the fashion community descends on London. And rightly so, because we have a huge amount to be proud of with London's fashion industry.
"But I think it says everything that is wrong with the industry that you have a plus-size event for women who are size 12 and over. It shows the fashion industry is not yet appreciating the diversity of beauty in this
country," Swinson said.
According to a recent survey by the London College of Fashion, the average British woman is size 14-16.

Really should say regular sized women.
London Plus-Size sounds huge compared to how big the average London woman is.

Plus size!
Plus size
As in, normal human beings
These models look like they've been eating. Plus sized whores.
Also, plus size is over size 12? That still sounds small to me.

It was kind of a half-joke. I googled around to find pictures of plus-sized models, and it came up with this article.

Half and half. Well, mostly the latter.
Disgusting
so plus size means 2 sizes below the national average
nice

When the national average is obese thats to be expected.
Holy shit is that just their "model" face or are they all clinically depressed?
Probably both.

It's fashion
if they actually stopped warping the public's perception of what human beings look like it'd collapse the whole industry
and THAT would sure be a tragic loss

So why did the fashion initially come about?
So why did the fashion initially come about?
I wonder this often, as no one ever wears any of the things shown there anyways, except maybe celebrities.
So why did the fashion initially come about?
Fashion is either experimental to promote a brand image (think concept cars that are entered into auto shows but will never enter production), or to hype up possible new products.
In the case of dangerously underweight models wearing stupid looking things it's the former, the stuff mentioned in this thread might be the latter

But in industry, you pander to the needs of people you are selling products to.
Doesn't it seem more likely you are actually providing the services that people originally wanted themselves?

I don't think "people like it" debunks the notion that the fashion industry is irresponsible and dangerous in how it depicts people
