Trump administration nixes sexual orientation questions on 2020 Census
The Trump administration canceled plans to probe Americans for their sexual orientation in the 2020 Census, nixing efforts by congressional Democrats who’d wanted a better picture of the country’s increasingly complex family and sexual dynamics.Gay-rights advocates had been pressing for the questions, saying it was time the country got an official count.
They appeared to have won a victory Tuesday morning, when the Census Bureau released its list of proposed subjects for 2020, and said “sexual orientation and gender identity” were new additions. But hours later the Census released an updated list striking the sexual orientation proposal.
he's pro-LGBT in the sense that he likes fucking everyone equally
It seems fishy to not collect stats on these things... I'm overthinking this but without actual statistics saying how much of the population is so and so, they might be able to make up more lies about that. Hopefully I'm just paranoid?

the really, really paranoid part of me is afraid this could be used to hide internment camps and shit like that.
A spokesman for the bureau said they had been asked by members of Congress to include the questions, and had been studying it — but determined there was no “federal need” for that information to be collected.
“The Subjects Planned for the 2020 Census and American Community Survey report released today inadvertently listed sexual orientation and gender identity as a proposed topic in the appendix. This topic is not being proposed to Congress for the 2020 Census or American Community Survey,” the bureau said in a statement.
Instead the 2020 census will return to the same age, race, occupation, marital status and other areas of inquiry that have been used for years.
Innacurate title.
This is not necessarily evil baboon's work.

Considering this is the decade of gay rights, I'm pretty sure if that happened it'd be one of the bigger human rights violation of recent history by a first world country
I'm not sure that'll ever happen really, but I mean, it COULD be used for that, likely won't, just seems unrealistic and far fetched
[del]This message was paid for by the Trump Administration[/del]

It's not paranoia.
I don't think there any good reasons for the Trump administration to do this. The Census Bureau obviously had already decided the questions were worthy of being included, and yet it gets axed right after being announced.
That leads me to believe that it's not only a case of them thinking it's just an unimportant question, because why make headlines having it removed? They must have a pragmatic reason in preventing the Census from asking about sexual orientation/gender identity, and it can't be a reason we'd like.
edit:
on second thought, maybe i should rethink accusing the trump admin of pragmatism.
Sometimes it's hard to tell if they do something because they are evil or just stupid.

Since when does Trump's administration let facts get in the way of their agenda? Like 01271 said, it seems this probably wasn't related to Trump or his administration. They wouldn't really care either way because if the facts a census gathers are inconvenient to them then they'll just pretend they don't exist.
To be fair, the article says that it was proposed that the census would START asking for sexual orientation this year, and the bureau in charge decided not to begin asking about sexual orientations on the census. I don't remember ever filling out a census but this article seems to suggest that sexual orientation has never been asked for on the census.

I still don't understand why it was removed. It's a perfectly fine thing to get statistics on.

Don't worry, that won't start until Pence takes over

it's so there's no official data to reference for supporting pro-lgbt issues

If I remember correctly, he took that flag from someone in the crowd. You can see it in his face that he's thinking *Do it for the votes*
Smells like the same reason he wants to fuck over climate-change research.
to be honest, I'd be really uncomfortable letting this adminstration know that I'm gay anyway.
this is actually trump's way of protecting gays because if the census asks for orientation then pence will know where to send his electropure™ roundup squads

I'd be really uncomfortable answering this question to any part of the government, under any administration. The government doesn't need to know who I choose to sleep with.
see what could happen is that the census uncovers that there are lgbt people litterally everywhere and that would mean that ideologically pure states such as texas or oklahoma would have to take those numbers into account

Yeah, this is basically just enacting DADT on a national scale.
If we don't know about them they don't exist and therefore we don't need to do anything for them.

Do you not know what a census is
They are anonymous
The point of asking this question is to get an accurate, no-fucking-around answer to the question of "how many of these people actually exist in the country?" for the point of policy.
