SOME US scientists warned on Friday that the full-body, graphic-image X-ray scanners now being used to screen passengers and airline crews at airports around the country may be unsafe.
'They say the risk is minimal, but statistically someone is going to get skin cancer from these X-rays,' Dr Michael Love, who runs an X-ray lab at the department of biophysics and biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University school of medicine, told AFP.
'No exposure to X-ray is considered beneficial. We know X-rays are hazardous but we have a situation at the airports where people are so eager to fly that they will risk their lives in this manner,' he said.
The possible health dangers posed by the scanners add to passengers' and airline crews' concerns about the devices, which have been dubbed 'naked' scanners because of the graphic image they give of a person's body, genitalia and all.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began rolling out full-body scanners at US airports in 2007, but stepped up deployment of the devices this year when stimulus funding made it possible to buy another 450 of the advanced imaging technology scanners.
Some 315 'naked' scanners are currently in use at 65 US airports, according to the TSA. Passengers and airline crew members, including pilots, are randomly selected to pass through the scanners. They have the option of refusing, but will then be subjected to what the TSA calls an 'enhanced' manual search by an agent.
sounds hot
M/F?
I don't care if people have to lie and say that these things will kill you instantly, anything that gets this blatant violation of our rights out of commission is a good thing.
I've never flown, and since these came out I never will.
So we're supposed to opt for a groping instead?
So we're supposed to opt for a groping instead?
If they do institute mandatory security groping before flights, they better get some hot security people working there.
I'll take the groping.
Rong?
What they should do is have high risk flights, so if you want to take the risk of having a terrorist on board you can skip all the annoying and invasive screening. I'd do it, the chance of being killed on a flight in minimal

Just as long as the terrorist are only allowed to crash into high risk buildings.

Or hear me out. We could like, have low risk on all flights. Crazy idea eh?

Next time you go on a flight stick a massive dildo down your pants and watch the reaction of the people behind the X-ray scanners.

If I take a plane again any time soon, I will do this in your honor.
So we're supposed to opt for a groping instead?
Yup. Now spread your legs, something is clearly lodged in your ass.
Oh baby, your ribcage is so sexy.

They don't scan that deep. Its meant to get a skin deep scan for things hidden beneath clothing. Unless you managed to package a bomb in your spleen (thats plan B :ninja:)

So if your a perv, join TSA today.
I pop Viagra before every scan.
I pop Viagra before every scan.
It is hard to walk around with an erection.
Do you waddle around?
I'm Irish, it wouldn't accomplish much.

Only with pants that is :smug:

Chick's got some muscular abs.
You know, instead of shooting xrays at us, they can already use the cosmic radiation that's all around us.
I think I heard about that technique being employed for cargo scans.
For those that think it's even more unsafe, well you're an idiot. It's not subjecting you to any more radiation than you're already getting. It's just utilizing pre-existing background radiation.
They can't do these on me
Hooray for being a minor

I can't wait until someone sues the TSA for groping their underage child.

Actually, they can. Parental permission is required but if it is refused, neither is getting on the plane.
X-Rays are harmful if given in high enough doses. Imagine a businessman that has to fly every other day the amount of Radiation he may get in a year of flying.

I could be wrong.

Anything in a high enough dose, can kill you.

You're right. Radiation is accumulative, even one scan is more radiation than you'd normally get without the scan and slightly increases your risk of cancer. The risk of one scan would of course be negligible, but not non-existent.
And all of this for the security theatre. Ho hum.
None of this shit works. It's just designed to make the braindead travelers feel safe.
How could they say the system worked when a bunch of passengers beat the shit out of a guy who smuggled a bomb on board?
How can the system work if they take your bottle of water, but let you keep several rounds of live ammunition in your carry-on (happened to me 2 days after the Xmas bomber last year while travelling through LAX security)?
This security shit doesn't work, and just costs the country a lot of money for some baseless peace of mind.
