The Associated Press reported on Monday that video from Battalion Chief Mark Johnson’s helmet camera shows a fire truck running over 16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan, who was lying on the ground following the crash. Johnson had apparently not been told of Yuan’s whereabouts or condition while directing the truck.

But Hayes-White’s order was immediately questioned by both the Black Firefighters Association (BFA), of which Johnson is a member, and an attorney for Ye’s family, Anthony Tarricone. “Why would anybody not want to know the truth?” Tarricone told the AP. “What’s wrong with knowing what happened? What’s wrong with keeping people honest? That’s what the helmet cam did, in effect, in this case.”
What the fuck? I can't even comprehend this.
How does this make any degree of sense?
so they're removing an incredibly useful piece of equipment to cover up their own failings aren't the helmet cameras also meant to assist dealing with those kinds of situations
Police should remove cameras because they record people getting shot. Literally the same stupid logic here.
Police should remove cameras because they record people getting shot. Literally the same stupid logic here.
the sad thing is this logic is used in laws to benefit police too
the sad thing is this logic is used in laws to benefit police too
I'm the only guy so far who wants to wear a body cam... covers my ass in lieu of complaints/lawsuits.
Streisand Effect at work.
You guys are getting it wrong (from what I understand) This ban has been in effect since 2009
The discovery of the footage led Chief Joanne Hayes-White to expand a 2009 order banning cameras on department grounds to include helmet cameras, citing concerns over firefighters’ safety.
Since these firefighters are first responders, they have to follow HIPAA laws, and therefore patient confidentiality. They are not banning dashcams and shit, but GoPros belonging to the firefighters for personal use. [editline]21st August 2013[/editline] (stupid editing is borked and I need to add more) They don't want to have headcam or phone videos of them in a house fire on facebook with the caption "This fucker got fucked up! #yolo." Long story short, they're not trying to cover up, but cover their asses from confidentiality suits
What the fuck kinda person sues the firefighter that saved his ass?
The guy saving your ass doesn't give him the right to have footage of it. He saved your ass but he doesn't own it and most importantly may not post video of your chocolate starfish all over the internet.
What the fuck kinda person sues the firefighter that saved his ass?
It happens a lot. People are assholes. Some states pass Good Samaritan laws which prohibit the suing of people trying to help you
That for the most part does not include emergency personnel.
