IMDB is closing down their message boards by 20th February
IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
There are also two weeks to save any messages (that you have made for example) for personal use before everything is disabled, after the 20th February.
IMDB's message boards were useless
Good riddance
Never really bothered with the IMDB message boards, were they that bad?
They were okay I guess, I hardly saw any practical use for them that the Q&A section didn't already provide.

Translation: we're done dealing with these colossal pigfuckers, just fuck everything.

There is this small friction of actual useful information and polite discussions but the amount is lesser compared to other forums related to movies. The rest is just insulting and which movie sucks more and etc.
Can't say I'm surprised it is gone then.
One of the worst 'forums' I've ever witnessed.
Imagine Youtube's comment sections but it's a forum.
maybe i'm incompetent but their forums were next to impossible to navigate
Yeah that's an awesome decision lmao. Every time I've glanced at one of their subforums it was always filled with shit threads complaining about inane bullshit, ANGRY arguments, or spoilers in titles.
A welcome purge
Should also include the comments section on news articles they link, AKA the place where Facebook spambots swarm
Imagine one day garry goes "well fuck those fp nerds" and deletes this place

You forgot the endless threads asking questions with incredibly obvious answers.
Pretty much every movie had a thread titled "Worst movie ever" or "Completely overrated". Its not really a huge loss. Its outlived its purpose. If you want to discuss/circlejerk/hate on movies there's always reddit.

This. Nothing of value is lost with this decision.
Wow RIP. My friends and I shitposted on the IMDB message boards throughout all of highschool. Every computer class, we were wasting time asking the hard questions, like, "what if when the Hulk got angry, all that got big were his nipples?"
It's the end of an era.
Never forgot the IMDb board for The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
Wait, IMDB had a message board?
Took a peak and holy shit, it's worse than any of the low tier forums I've ever witnessed.
Good.
Legit the worst message boards I've ever seen.
Good
To be fair, on a lot of the smaller movies or TV shows, there was occasionally the odd thread that led to some decent discussion. It wasn't all a shitshow.
I don't know what you guys are talking about....

Clearly the IMDB forums are totally worth keeping.

That reminds me of tv.com they have the same issue of people giving shows unfair ratings or people fighting over which show is better then another in the reviews section of a show.

I never interacted with the 'main' forums at all really, but I'm going to be REALLY sad to see the little discussion board for each movie / tv show etc disappear. For countless years I've always rediscovered an old show or movie I loved and gone straight on to the IMDB page for it, to see what other fans of the series or movies were saying. To be honest I never encountered any trolls in my 11+ years doing that - it seemed like the little gathering of like-minded nostalgic fans I'd always find were similarly enjoyable to interact with. I couldn't even begin to count the times those little sub boards put me on to special editions, remakes, fan edits, upcoming releases etc that I would never otherwise have known about... I'm a total hermit and I only get my news and updates from a select few sources like that.
Just a few weeks back, I was thinking about an old favourite show of mine, Seaquest DSV. I hopped on the IMDB page for it and to my surprise, found some talk there of a Bluray release - something I had zero clue about and likely never would have otherwise. A few weeks later and here I am re-watching an old favourite in beautiful HD. I would never have got that without that little board there.
That's what I'm going to miss. I can't comment on the shitfight mess I hear about in all the general forums and such, but losing those show/movie-specific boards is really going to suck hard :\
facepunchers should stop posting on imdb's message boards.

TBH I wouldn't be shocked
probably for the best
40% of the time it was just guessing, then getting angry at review scores
30% of the time it was unrelated to the movie at all
and 30% it was spoilers
