Photo: Reuters
A Bluefin tuna has sold for a record $US1.76 million ($A1.69 million) at a Tokyo auction, nearly three times the previous high set last year. In the year’s first auction at Tokyo’s sprawling Tsukiji fish market, the 222 kilogram tuna caught off northeastern Japan sold for 155.4 million yen. The fish’s tender red meat is prized for sushi, but Bluefin tuna stocks have fallen globally over the past 15 years amid overfishing. ============================================================ Source: http://www.smh.com.au/world/tuna-sells-for-record-17m-in-tokyo-20130105-2c9o9.html
So then does that mean the food made from that one tuna is going to make even more money? Like $1000 for a piece of sashimi
Bluefin tunas are fucking delicious.
Can you even imagine what would happen to our global fish populations if we didn't do fishing of any kind for a whole year? Any idea??
Can you even imagine what would happen to our global fish populations if we didn't do fishing of any kind for a whole year? Any idea??
There would actually be fish in the water!
There would actually be fish in the water!
:O [editline]4th January 2013[/editline] Also, Damn nearly 500lbs of fish. I take it that Tuna doesn't get all gamey when it gets older and bigger?
No I would like to have same gamey tuna, that way at least it can play games with me when I am eating it. Though really I do not know though I would like a gamey tuna for that kind of flavor.
If we didn't exhaust their stocks they'd get a lot bigger.
Well I'm not to blame. I even HATE the taste of fish.
Well I would like to see some more fish in the ocean, I guess that I am doing something good by not eating fish all that much then.
Uh...
gam·y also gam·ey (gm) adj. gam·i·er, gam·i·est 1. a. Having the flavor or odor of game, especially game that is slightly spoiled. b. Ill-smelling; rank. 2. Showing an unyielding spirit; plucky
[editline]4th January 2013[/editline] Game as in animals hunted for food or sport, like Deer or Elk.
Can you even imagine what would happen to our global fish populations if we didn't do fishing of any kind for a whole year? Any idea??
Do you know how many people would die of hunger?
I knew tuna always lured in fishloads of clams, but I never thought someone could get over a million dollars for one.
I wonder how many families that fish can feed.
I wonder how many families that fish can feed.
It's going to feed a handful of wealthy people.
that better be some fucking good tuna
The best sushi restaurants and artists purchase these in an auction so delicious
Bluefin tunas are fucking delicious.
Best sushi and cheapest on the menu.
i do wanna see what would happen if fishing stopped for a year. we'd be drowning in fish!
Stop using bigass trawlers or finally enforcing bigger net-whole seizes would be enough,
Commercial Fishing needs to go back to small nets, rod and line, and small crabbing cages. Sure fish meat will become more expensive, but it'll help bring up fish numbers again.

The investment needed to yield the same amount of fish has more than tenfolded in the last 20 years alone. Basically we already destroyed 90% of the fish that used to be in the sea. Fishing with smaller nets would just bring profit back from mega-coorporations to fishers. It would also solve the Somalia pirate problem and the EU illegal immigrant problem to a degree.
