A Wells Fargo worker decided to ask his CEO for a raise and wanted everyone at the company to know about it. So he emailed the CEO and CC'd hundreds of thousands of his co-workers. Now, the whole world knows about it. The employee, Tyrel Oates, asked Wells Fargo (WFC) chief John Stumpf to take a stance on income inequality by offering all 300,000 employees a $10,000 raise. Oates estimates that an across-the-board pay raise would cost the bank $3 billion, "just a small fraction of what Wells Fargo pulls in annually." In the email, a copy of which was obtained by CNNMoney, he pointed out that in the second quarter alone the bank had earned $5.7 billion. ... By boosting workers' pay, Oates said Wells Fargo will "help to make its people, its family, more happy, productive, and financially stable." Oates urged Stumpf to consider the "positive publicity" the bank would enjoy by giving workers a raise "in a time of extreme consumer skepticism towards banks." The bank also has an opportunity to set an example for other big corporations by making its workers' a priority. Wells Fargo could "show the rest of the United States, if not the world, that, yes, big corporations can have a heart other than philanthropic endeavors." Oates also notes that Stumpf, who routinely ranks as one of the highest paid bank CEOs in America, personally took in over $19 million last year, "more than most of the employees will see in a life time." ... He ends his email with a clarion call to his co-workers: "It is time that we ask, no, it is time that we demand to be rightfully compensated for the hard work that we accomplish ... And while the voice of one person in a world as large as ours may seem only like a whisper, the combined voices of each and all of us can move mountains!"
CNN Money
and next week we'll hear about another email from this guy asking the CEO for his job back
If everyone put aside their selfishness, we, the world. Could accomplish many great things. We live in a selfish and scared world though, not a selfless and curious one. I would love to see the people of our world come together and accomplish amazing feats, but that'll never happen in our life time.
Dudes got some courage, lets hope something better than just being fired happens to him.
The article doesn't mention that the email went to the CEO's spam folder and he never bothered reading it.

Though if we did really work together - not just on some aspects but all. I'm positive this place would be better for all.
It's time for us, fellow facepunchers to demand gold membership back!! (User was permabanned for this post ("alt of perma'd user" - Orkel))
It's time for us, fellow facepunchers to demand gold membership back!!
why on earth would we do that?
That still sounds like kind of a lofty request after he lays out how much money the bank makes. A huge bank like that probably has many more expenses to consider than payroll, and $3 billion might be more of a substantial chunk than this employee thinks. It's not like they just pull in tons of money and put zero of it back into the company. I don't doubt that the CEO and higher-ups are making unreasonable amounts of money, but I do doubt that this guy has done all the proper homework.
Yeah OK. :v:
Umm, yeah, we should be demanding higher pay, our money is less powerful and paycheckers aren't rising meaning we're actually making less than 10, 20 and 30 years ago. [editline]12th October 2014[/editline] Someone in the 1970's actually made more than someone now does.

He's fired. He got the bank media attention that they didn't want, and after it dies down, he will be fired.

They think raising pay is as simple as "company earns XYZ, raise our pay and you'll still earn XY". Having been intimately familiar with top management in a multi-billion dollar company, it's almost laughable that people actually think "You'll still make $3b instead of $5b!" is a viable tradeoff. They almost literally understand nothing about running big business. CEOs do tend to make more money than they should though. A lot of people in the high profile positions agree, but they'll never say it publicly or really do anything about it because they also hope to be the guy at the very top one day and making that kind of money. The only people that will go out of their way to make the point are ones that are already well-off, or don't have responsibilities to other people (family) and can risk tainting their career (or they do it anyway and are just stupid).
It's time for us, fellow facepunchers to demand gold membership back!!
I've been here since 2008 and I still don't or ever will probably get gold membership. Sometimes you just got to accept that not everyone can make the american dream.
That's just the equivalent of raising all staff pay $5.20/hr pay (assuming they work 40/hr weeks).

He'll just get fired, a guy I worked with did basically the same thing with our boss and he got replaced within a week.
He's fired.
Of course, he won't be fired right away. First they'll cut his hours, then cut them again, then give him the worst shifts, then fire him at the slightest mistake.
At my workplace one of my coworkers is getting this sort of treatment. She's in her mid-late 60s and works a few other jobs. She's been with the company for 15 years. Obviously being older she does have some special needs, but it hasn't been an issue and it's never been unreasonable. The past year she's specified her requested work times, things like only 4 hour shifts or not fridays and thursdays, nothing crazy. Almost every request is honored as a rule at my workplace, which has been awesome, but she has hardly ever gotten hers honored. Recently, though, she's been having issues with her back and hips and it's almost certainly from her work here. So she requested shorter shifts and the requests weren't honored. She went to a doctor and they confirmed that it's probably because of her work there, so they sent a note stating she can't work more than 4 hours at a time and not consecutive days. By no means is this an unreasonable request, since at this point most people are getting short shifts and don't work several days in a row anyhow. Management's response was to give her no hours, for four weeks and counting. She's on the payroll, on the schedule, just given no work. for weeks. This is obviously an attempt to get her to quit. What sucks is that a year ago this wouldn't have flied, you would have had a small revolt on your hands by the front end staff who would have made their opinions known and expressed that in comments and actions against management, but since then most of the people who worked with her and knew her have been replaced by seasonal people and themselves replaced by new workers who aren't established yet. So yea, this is exactly how employers handle that sort of thing. It won't be an outright thing, they'll slowly fuck him until they find a reason to justify it and then they'll play it off like it was the proper thing to do, even though everyone breaks that rule or whatever.

Unfortunately we don't live in that reality, philanthropic pursuits are sometimes put on the back-burner to ensure some can merely survive (Or pure greed in others). However, the 20th/21st centuries have shown a lot of progression with civilization, we have the means to fill everyone's needs, GMOs are today's replicators, medicine has traversed lightyears (We can regrow full organs from single cells now). Needless to say, this reality is not locked to inequality forever, even without the immediate funding for philanthropic ventures, our world is slowly becoming closer to a Trek-like reality because of action of those who want to change it.
Ehhhh no. Sorry to water down your economic perspective, but to assume that a raise will increment productivity... That's wrong as hell. And its something max weber notticed in his book about prothestant etics and capitalism which is today a standard preposition in macroeconomics. Now, if everyone was given 10.000, it would mean everybody was still, when compared against others, in the same position as before. And we kinda (I include occupy wall street in this) agreed that the issue was relative poverty, not absolute poverty. [seed eater] I assume that by your flag you are living and working in the us. Well, that kind of thing would have hardly happened here in Argentina or Europe. Does she belong to a syndicate/union? One issue with the kind of capitalism you pals have is that workers are atomized and thus don't have many means to impose their will (ofc, can be justified or not). Its awful to see the treatment that lady gets, but if an organization from the state could penalize the company for such a dick behaviour, being that she wants to keep working wiith an adjusted salary (I assume) plus having her condition fully justified.
Takes a lot of balls to do this. That being said, banks tend to pay their employees pretty well to begin with. Part time tellers and customer service agents start off at around $11 an hour usually. Still though, a raise never hurt anyone! It'd be nice to see.
His name is disturbingly close to my own.
