An AirAsia flight travelling from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, the company has said.
Indonesian media say more than 160 people were on the Airbus A320-200.
Flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24 (23:24 GMT), Malaysia-based AirAsia tweeted.
This can't be fucking happening again
I really didn't think this would happen AGAIN this year
2014 is the year of missing planes
Okay this is getting silly now
I hope they are okay
Bet it was a hard tail over right.
I'm starting to think theres maybe another bremuda triangle there but I'll stay quiet until much more is known
Is there a wormhole over the Indian ocean or something?
Okay this is getting silly now
Most Asian countries buy leftover US/European aircraft; most of which is +20 years old.
i am never going to fly over the indian ocean ever
Is there a wormhole over the Indian ocean or something?
bremuta triangle is off the east coast of US, and mostly a sailors tail or methane bursts.
It could reappear, there's no official report saying it has been downed, unless they reported to ATC there was a problem on board and they were declaring a mayday
don't jump the gun too soon

The Singapore Square. Its boundaries will be established once two more planes disappear over Southeast Asia.
Theres a lot of things that may cause this. It does not mean that the plane crashed ffs
The langoliers are busy this year
I'll repost and update my explanation of why it seems like there's been so many plane crashes this year - it's because there truly has been an unusually high number of high-fatality incidents this year.

Nothing too extraordinary in the number of crashes.

Huge jump in the number you get when you divide deaths by crashes - because usually most of the crashes are just tiny little private jets, but this year hundreds of people have been killed in just the two Malaysia Airlines incidents
New info, they lost contact nearly 5 hours ago
lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control just after 06:15am local time

A possible hijacking?
Not really, the Pilot could've been fatigued or tired or confused. Hijacking would've sounded off a mayday and the transponder turned off immediately.

You realise that it takes a long long time for this information to filter out to the world news?
This won't be new information. If the plane turned up after the last report to ATC you wouldn't hear about it.
The plane's as good as gone, it's been missing too long.
At this point we're either going to find wreckage or nothing at all.

Yeah I had no idea about the timing of this event when I made that post. I just hope wherever the transponder turned off was over land, could mean the possibility of survivors

which reminds me, does flightradar24 have the flightpath of it?
Most Asian countries buy leftover US/European aircraft; most of which is +20 years old.
Not really, they have been buying pretty new planes, malasya airlines was a new plane for example its just ground maintinence might not be kept up to the same spec as us/European airlines

Here is its page on FR but I don't know how to see the path
It left at 5:20am local time and was meant to arrive at 8:30am, but it lost contact around 7:30am and it's now 11am

I can't seem to find it. I put it in search and it's last flight's status is "unknown".
A bit haunting to see..
Worse scenario, it might have crashed into the sea. I hope the plane can be found ASAP
Early reports that the aircraft requested an unusual route before losing contact.
There may be more to this yet.
the triforce of missing airplanes is complete

is a crash into the sea instant death? i hope so, crashing into water and drowning would be terrifying
either that or they got away on life rafts (they have those on the plane dont they? along with the float jacket things)

depends on how the plane entered the water
if it just fell like rock hitting the ground from a 4 story building, guaranteed instant death
if the pilots tried to guide it into the ocean and perform a sea touchdown and broke up, possibility that all or most of the people survived.
However the last one depends on full co-operation with the crew, as in don't inflate your fucking life rafts while on board.
Pretty sure this is a terrorist related activity, but the only problem is that they're not public about their attacks.
how can you even make speculation like this
Air Asia has turned their FB page grey and removed Christmas branding
