NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former President George W. Bush is returning Friday to New Orleans — the scene of one of his presidency's lowest points — to tout the region's recovery from the nation's costliest natural disaster on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

He's chosen to deliver remarks at Warren Easton Charter High School, the same school he visited on the first anniversary of the catastrophic storm. He is accompanied by his wife, Laura, whose library foundation helped rebuild what is the oldest public school in New Orleans.
The school's success is one of the president's brighter moments in what was an extremely trying time for the Bush administration. Bush was vilified for his government's lackluster response.
I think it's an interesting reunion to see how people think of his actions now compared to the past.

I'm surprised nobody has attempted to run him out of town with pitchforks yet. Meh, the day is still young.

I sure hope it happens.
Probably charged $100,000 to be there.
New Orleans corrupt mayor was more at fault for the response than Bush. He never gave a mandatory evac until it was too late, and downplayed the hurricane because he didn't want to affect tourism. If he did his job there wouldn't be half as many deaths from Katrina.
Until yesterday, I had no idea how lawless And violent the city was for a good while, especially in the convention center and astrodome.

It was absolute chaos man. A lot of the problems were to the delays and underestimates of necessity of care with FEMA.

Uh...they declared martial law dude.

You mean Superdome? Astrodome is in Houston.
Has it really been 10 years since katrina and the bush presidency.
Fuuuuccckkkkk

Refugees went to both the Superdome and Astrosome. Lots of refugees left the state permanently. Lots in Texas.

Bush presidency ended in 2009.

It was absolutely fucked up. And it's still lawless and chaotic to this day, but not to the degree that it was after Katrina.
I'm actually not surprised people tried to run him out of town, George Bush wasn't the villain for the problems that occurred here in New Orleans, it was the mayor at the time, Ray Nagin. The faulty levee's caused the flooding to be worse, when it was supposed to be "a good barrier" for a hurricane like Katrina. The city was poorly managed during and after Katrina thanks to the Ray. He would be run way far out of town if he were to come back.
Honestly back when katrina happened I expected one of the world's most wealthiest countries to have reconstructed and bring everything back to normal within atleast one or two years. But it's such a tragedy how neglected new orleans has been.

Ray "Chocolate City" Nagin is in prison where he belongs for laundering money during Katrina.
“Ray Nagin’s sentencing brings to a close a sordid chapter in New Orleans’ history in which the man charged with leading a city out of crisis instead chose to enrich himself, his family and friends,” said Rafael C. Goyeneche III, President of the Metropolitan Crime Commission. “This case epitomizes the vital role the public plays in exposing corruption as information supplied by citizens through the Metropolitan Crime Commission aided the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office in bringing this case to a just conclusion.”
Yet people blame Bush like he had the hurricane formed to kill black people. Ray Nagin neglected to issue an evacuation. People died because of it.

Hell even Baton Rouge hasn't been the same since with the huge influx of refugees they got. Most cities in Louisiana were greatly affected from not just a weather damage standpoint. Lafayette got off pretty fine though, since the sheriffs stopped the refugee buses and turned them back to Baton Rouge.

Don't forget he wouldn't allow FEMA to begin relief efforts til some time after the hurricane came through.

What are you top gear? The city was stupidly overbuilt, the lower 9th ward was mostly family owned houses and for one reason or another didn't qualify for flood coverage, its terrible that redtape and the government got in the way of people rebuilding but honestly blindly scooping up wetlands to make neighborhoods was insanely shortsighted, even if the levies hadn't failed then they would have by now. The government should have just bought the land up and returned it to wetland
New Orleans was a disaster waiting to happen and no one that had the power to stop it did anything until it happened. Officials knew a large hurricane would destroy the levees.

Yeah thre tragedy is the government did know and yet those people still suffer to this day with it not being their fault.
It reminds me of the 2011 Japanese Tsunami, which caused more deaths and more destruction and was more costly than Katrina. Later we saw before and after pictures in which the cleanup was so good you could barely tell a tsunami had even happened.
But New Orleans? No, still looks like a shithole
Shame New Orleans will never improve. If you look at before-and-after pictures of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you can see that it improved drastically after Katrina hit. But looking at before-and-after pictures of New Orleans, it'll still look like shit.
I never understood the whole blame Bush thing. What the hell did he do that was so wrong?

I really mean that as a question.

Supposedly Bush was being criticized because he was on vacation in Texas after Katrina struck landfall in Louisiana/Mississippi rather than being in D.C. However, he still contacted the mayor of New Orleans to evacuate the city.
However, contrary to what people believe, Bush did nothing wrong at all. The people who did wrong were the Governor of Louisiana, and the Mayor of New Orleans. Bush was put in a standstill as the governor did not request Bush's help in the situation, leaving him powerless in the situation. He was planning on sending in FEMA but the Governor was reluctant until later to request Bush's help, who sent in FEMA.
Essentially, the things people believe Bush did wrong weren't because Bush didn't care at all, it's because he was powerless in the matter thanks to the Governor of LA.
I was 12 during Katrina. I didn't even think there would be a New Orleans after it hit.
Also in case this post implies I'm from there, I'm not.

I'm not really sure people are still suffering, sure they lost everything but they've also all been relocated and its been 10 years since and the neighborhood has been demoed and cleaned up

They really are still suffering. Not everything has been rebuilt. Been there recently?

Not to mention Crawford was basically a second White House. Not much Bush couldn't do from there.
Can't believe something this happened in the United States of all places. The government response during the disaster and after was horrible.

Of all the things Bush gets shit on, this is the most baffling. He tried everything they he could, yet he still gets shit on.

Yeah, dull as he may be sometimes, it is kind of fucked that he's the scapegoat for this ordeal
