I think it's because the music is very minimal.
I remember watching that scene when I was younger and it scared the crap out of me.

Pretty much. It's the sound (or lack thereof) that makes it creepy as fuck. The only sounds you're hearing is the squishing as they slowly devour him bit by bit.
