Skyfall co-star Naomie Harris addresses black Bond rumour

The actress, who stars opposite Daniel Craig in Skyfall, confirmed that Idris Elba met with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli.
Harris plays Bond's fellow MI6 field agent Eve in the Sam Mendes-directed Skyfall, and has suggested that her character "wants to be a female version of Bond".
"I didn't realise that there was this talk [about a black Bond], and then I did a film with Idris, and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli," Harris told The Huffington Post. "And that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy."
She doesn't say what Idris met with Barbara Broccoli about specifically, other than to add that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future of a black James Bond, suggesting that the meeting between Idris and Broccoli may have included discussion of a black James Bond at some point. But if it is to happen, it wouldn't be any time soon, since Craig is signed up for 2 more James Bond movies (after Skyfall). And given that, since the franchise under the Broccoli production era began in 1962, the company has produced a new James Bond film about every 2 years. Although there was a 4 year gap between the last one, and Skyfall.
But if that every-two-years trend continues, Craig's reign would continue through, at least, 2016 - 4 years from now - which means if the plan is then for a black Bond to replace him, the black Bond film wouldn't happen before 2018. Again, if the 1-film-every-2-years trend continues. And assuming it's Idris, he'll be 48 years old by then; a seasoned age to begin your Bond career. Daniel Craig is 44 right now. When he started, he was 38; when Sean Connery started, he was 32; Roger Moore was 46; Pierce Brosnan was 42. And the others were all either in their early 40s or 30s.
Elba has previously been cited as a likely successor to Craig in the role, and has confirmed that he would be keen to play Bond. "I would do it, but I don't want to be called the first black James Bond," the actor told NPR last year.

A black James Bond would solidify the theory that "James Bond" and "007" is just a code name.

I really like the idea of James Bond being a code name. It gives them more freedom on how they cast future bonds.

By that logic, it also solidifies the theory that James Bond is a timelord, or that he changes his face with the use of concentrated leprechaun tears.
There is nothing to suggest that the reason James Bond keeps changing his face is because of plot reasons. Sometimes actors die or move on.
Beyond that, I don't think there is an explanation.

Would break tradition, and be awesome.
It's like Doctor Who. Anyone with X traits can be the doctor. 007 is a destructive man and a womanizer, with amazing skill. Anyone with those traits can be him.

Code name? That's asinine. It's been the same James Bond for 50 years, just with different accents, physical characteristics, and background stories.
But for real, why do people believe this? That might have been the case for the original Ian Fleming stories but for the movies I sincerely doubt that we're supposed to believe it's been the same person under the James Bond/007 persona.

every code name have a specific set of characteristics, 007 is charm and being unbelievably totally hetero.

Just to spin it a bit differently, I always thought that each film (and therefore mission) wasn't necessarily in the same universe as each other.

I don't really consider the Bond films with different actors to be a continuation of each other or part of the same universe (even though I know they're meant to be until the reboot), but that's probably just my very liberal interpretation of it.
Rather they are just different movies that all have the James Bond element. Honestly I don't want them all to be in a shared universe.
Black James Bond would be cool though.
I always saw that they were just separate movies, never that they were linked either by James Bond being necessarily the same person or a code name or anything. They're just movies about a guys who are interpretations of the same character. If you try and link them it doesn't make any sense.
I love Idris Elba, he's a really good actor.
I'm sorry, but when I see Idris Elba, all I can think of is stringer bell.
Of course Bond and 007 is a code name. Remember in one of the more recent ones M didn't know if she could trust him, even after 45 years of faithful service? Psh

Why has this not been made yet (besides the fact that it would kill the franchise, which makes sense why they wouldn't do it).
still see him as stringer bell

Considering some of the crazy stuff that can be found in the series, one could easily assume he just underwent somesort of facial reconstruction procedure and took some drugs that changed his melanin levels

Wasn't that concept used in a different movie in reverse?

But that was before Bond became an agent.
To me that where the codename theory falls down. The Craig films are supposed to be set before Dr. No aren't they? He has a grittier outlook on life because he's new.
I know that contradicts what I said, but you know what I mean :D

That would be fucking outside-the-box awesome.

That's not how it works.
at all.
Real 007 Legends fake trailer, not video game.

Wrong, James Bond
The Craig films are supposed to be set before Dr. No aren't they? He has a grittier outlook on life because he's new.
I know that contradicts what I said, but you know what I mean :D
Besides the countless refferences to everyone bond touches dying and him grieving their deaths, yeah.
aren't the films not even based on the books anymore because they ran out of books? If so, the films have been going into the non-canon zone for a while now, so a black James Bond wouldn't have a continuity problem anyways
That's not how it works.
at all.
Maybe it was a bad example but the only one I could think of at the time :v:
I mean, all the doctors are fast thinking, witty, very highly intelligent and have personalities that "stand out". yeah, they're all the same timelord, but that's not directly what I was thinking about.
I mean imagine if the doctor changed into a hyper relaxed carefree slacker who was unnaturally chaotic neutral. that's like having a James Bond that is a hermit. Bond has to be super hetero
I mean what isn't hetero about a man that does this to every car he owns

Well he's already been Japanese
or nevermind

I wish FP could contain themselves enough to not bring up Doctor Who in almost every thread, god fuck.

I'd love to see this but with Elba instead of Craig.
Who cares what race or gender it is as long as there is witty dialogue, action and explosions, and also gratuitous villainy and sex.
