• US alarmed by prospect of Scottish ‘Yes’ in independence vote
A “Yes” vote for independence would be an economic mistake for Scotland and a geopolitical disaster for the west, senior US figures – including Alan Greenspan – tell the Financial Times as Washington wakes up to the chance that its closest ally could break up this week. Having assumed for months that “No” would win comfortably, Washington has reacted with alarm to opinion polls showing that Thursday’s referendum is going down to the wire. “We have an interest in seeing the UK remain strong, robust and united,” said Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman. Mr Greenspan, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, said the economic consequences of independence would be “surprisingly negative for Scotland, more so than the Nationalist party is in any way communicating”.
Source
Scotland has very little to gain and a lot to lose in this.
Only 4'ish days to go right? It's on thursday with results friday or something right?
I'm doubting that Scotland could stay afloat as an independent nation for long. That's great that they want to exist separate anything else, and everyone's all too familiar with the pride that the majority of Scots seem to radiate, but it would be a big gamble on their part. What does Scotland have, exactly? Are there any untapped or desirable resources they could exploit as an independent nation? If not, I'm doubting they'll be able to stay economically stable on the world stage. Plus, it'd probably piss off England. Nobody walks away from pissing off England.
Tbh I really do not see the need nor the purpose for a split from the union Whose to say the leader won't be a big fucking twat and turn things upside down? I know I'm Australian and don't know the entire story but I hope that the no majority win
US is more alarmed by the prospect of Piers Morgan coming back to the states if they vote no.
US is more alarmed by the prospect of Piers Morgan coming back to the states if they vote no.
uk take him back please
Read up on it a bit, there are positive economic factors on both sides. For example, a large portion of UK debt is currently offset by north sea oil (or some shit)
i'm surprised that this is the opinion of the US considering every other american facepuncher wants every formerly independent country to be independent whether they want it or not
What are they gonna do? Sanction them? Scotland would become Britain's Cuba.
we'll separate, they'll be rude about it for a few days then we'll be friends again, go grab a england a pint and trade together for the next few hunner years
What are they gonna do? Sanction them? Scotland would become Britain's Cuba.
why would they allow a vote on independence and then drop sanctions on them it never happened to literally every other country that became independent peacefully
send in the marines also who listens to greenspan anymore?
i'm surprised that this is the opinion of the US considering every other american facepuncher wants every formerly independent country to be independent whether they want it or not
im not well informed about this whole matter but if a country doesnt want independence then i don't think americans care thats a pretty dumb generalization you are making
i'm surprised that this is the opinion of the US considering every other american facepuncher wants every formerly independent country to be independent whether they want it or not
I don't know if you've noticed, but majority of American facepunchers don't really care for the current American government or its policies. I'd say the Americans here do not in any way reflect the majority of Americans.
i'm surprised that this is the opinion of the US considering every other american facepuncher wants every formerly independent country to be independent whether they want it or not
I'm sure someone could say something about UK FPers saying dumb things about Americans, but that's also dumb so let's just drop the whole thing.
i'm surprised that this is the opinion of the US considering every other american facepuncher wants every formerly independent country to be independent whether they want it or not
I wasn't aware we even cared
I wasn't aware we even cared
It's not surprising since the UK is one of America's strongest European allies. Though I don't see how Scotland parting from the UK would weaken it in America's perspective of interests.
am i the only one who thinks it'd be cool to see an independent scotland even if it's a terrible idea then again ive been playing too many paradox games
I'm sure someone could say something about UK FPers saying dumb things about Americans, but that's also dumb so let's just drop the whole thing.
Can't we just be brothers that like different things and shit. Like I know ya'll like your tea warm, it pisses every other day. Most parts of the US are under sunlight, so we prefer tea cold. Can't we just be like, "Yeah, tea."
It's not surprising since the UK is one of America's strongest European allies. Though I don't see how Scotland parting from the UK would weaken it in America's perspective of interests.
we need those William Wallace types for the war on terror
we'll separate, they'll be rude about it for a few days then we'll be friends again, go grab a england a pint and trade together for the next few hunner years
"No we can't spot you for that pint Scotland." "And yes, I haven't forgotten about the last 6 I bought you." "Okay fine, I'll buy you this one pint and that's your lot. Happy?" You guys have a stupendous amount of work to actually do the second you go independent if you want to be taken seriously as a country. I've not seen too much from the Yes side relating to this stuff, I'm not actively looking for it though. Sorted out a currency yet? Got any structure for a government in place and waiting? Trade agreements are probably gonna need to be ready almost instantly, it's not like any country in the UK has a particularly strong internal economy. It really does just seem like a stupid amount of risk and a waste of time over what boils down to nationalism at most.
“We have an interest in seeing the UK remain strong, robust and united,”
"We need another irresponsible unrepresentative government willing to blindly charge into another military quagmire on our call"
Nobody walks away from pissing off England.
Our country "walked away". U.K. took a chunk out of us. But that chunk was slowing us down anyway.
Scotland has very little to gain and a lot to lose in this.
Won't taxes be paid to a scottish government rather than to London, and then have London redistribute it. That's quite something. And also laws that apply in the UK will not necessarly apply to Scotland if it goes independent, and all kinds of things like that. For all they care, they can do whatever they like, if that serves their national interests, etc. , things wich couldn't be said is they remained in the union.
Our country "walked away". U.K. took a chunk out of us. But that chunk was slowing us down anyway.
You guys walked away after kicking the UK in the nuts first. Kind of hard to chase after someone when your nuts are sore.
"We need another irresponsible unrepresentative government willing to blindly charge into another military quagmire on our call"
My government represents me perfectly well thank you.
My government represents me perfectly well thank you.
Well it would appear that 50% or more of people in scotland disagree with you.
Fuck Scotland. I don't want them to change how I see the global map or even think of the UK in general. It's kinda like how you grow up thinking Pluto is a planet, but then scientist reclassify it as something else.
it'll be a laugh
