Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions has ordered federal prosecutors to return to tough policies against drug abusers, ending a push by the Obama administration to clear prisons of lower-level criminals serving long, mandatory minimum sentences
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-politics-sessions-drugwar-20170511-story.html
One step forward, 10 steps backwards.
Sessions is a piece of shit.
One step forward, 10 steps backwards.
Um? Where was the step forward?
Um? Where was the step forward?
With Obama
This is why old fossils with a stick up their asses shouldn't be in any form of power. Can't wait to hear of all those guys being arrested and sentenced to five years for a few grams of weed.
If we're lucky, Sessions won't be around for long. Of course, that assumes this is a sane world; that means he's in line for being President in 2020. :suicide:
... And right back to throwing drug users in prison instead of helping them. We need system for rehab, not jailing people with addictions.
"Small government"
One more thread plucked from the fabric of a free nation. The War on Drugs was (and is) nothing more than a tool to feed our minorities and our poor into a prison machine for profit. It has destroyed countless lives over nothing, and is one of the single greatest factors for the continued existence of ghettos, gangs, and drug violence. I also can't help but notice how effective a tool it is for voter suppression. Those with criminal records are barred from voting in many (red) states. Finding ways to arrest more people who stand opposed to Republican policy (minorities, poor people) disenfranchises those groups -- strips them of their basic right to have a voice in our democratic system.
With Obama
I think Obama was the best president of at least the past two decades, maybe 3.
I think Obama was the best president of at least the past two decades, maybe 3.
I didnt vote for him either election but I agree with this
I wonder if he's getting a bigger cash incentive from the private prisons or the companies using prison labor for their manufacturing

“We are returning to the enforcement of the laws as passed by Congress, plain and simple,” Sessions said. “If you are a drug trafficker, we will not look the other way, we will not be willfully blind to your misconduct.” “These are not low-level drug offenders we, in the federal courts, are focusing on,” Sessions said. “These are drug dealers, and you drug dealers are going to prison.” "Drug trafficking is an inherently dangerous and violent business,” Sessions said. “If you want to collect a drug debt, you can’t file a lawsuit in court. You collect it with the barrel of a gun.” Guess they felt it was necessary to leave this out for some reason.

Sessions, the guy who was so "Pro states rights" is a hypocrite and like always, you're here to put into context why that's okay, why no one should say much of anything to oppose this. Sorry, but this is pretty fucked up. Mandatory minimums are responsible for a huge amount of damage to the US.
“If you want to collect a drug debt, you can’t file a lawsuit in court. You collect it with the barrel of a gun.”
Yeah, but if the drugs were were legal you wouldn't have to do it tha-.. Oh. riiight.
Here's what the issue is, Nesto.
In his memo, Sessions said prosecutors must disclose “all facts” relevant to a sentence, like drug amounts. He canceled a Holder policy that said prosecutors should not use sentencing enhancement motions to coerce guilty pleas.

With the rise of federal mandatory sentencing laws in the 1980s and 1990s, judges were stripped of much of their discretion on how to sentence drug users. Decisions made by prosecutors often effectively determine how long offenders will spend in prison. For example, if federal prosecutors include the amount of drugs in their written charges, that can trigger a mandatory minimum sentence.
Based on what the AG himself is after, your half assed explanation that this is about "Drug dealers" is full out bullshit. This is about everyone who's caught with any illicit substance being forced to serve a mandatory minimum. Mandatory minimum sentences are why the US prison system is so crowded with non violent offenders who become repeat offenders with violent offenses because prison turns people into criminals extremely effectively. Not only is this a very round about form of voter suppression, this is a powerful tool to enrich the groups that are pushing for, and profiting from, Private Prisons.

that name though, it's like being called johnny disco and absolutely hating any kind of dancing

remember when the republicans were saying sessions wasn't a racist twisted old fuck and the democrats were just sniping his character? ya maybe the democrats might have been on to something, oh well.
