I’m not sure whether there’s really a huge market for $4.00 USD movie rentals on Steam, but that’s the hope of Miramax, Lionsgate, and Summit. Films from all three publishers have shown up on Valve’s digital platform today.
All of the films appear to have a 48 hour rental period, which can be used at any point within a 30 day period of paying. Presumably that means the 48 hours starts ticking down the moment you start watching, but you don’t have to get around to viewing within 48 hours of purchase. At least, I think.
Good movies i noticed on steam for 3-4$ a movie rental:

etc.
They also have the entire Saw series and the entire twilight series on steam.
I didn't even realize Steam did movies.
I didn't even realize Steam did movies.
its mostly been indie movies about games and funimation anime movies like bleach, but this is the first actual movement of a ton of good movies.
too bad its rental-only. would like to permamently buy crank 1 and 2
honestly, letting me be able to invite a couple of friends to watch evil dead 2 together online would be great.
Eh, the "rental" part turns me off. I mean, $4 isn't that bad for the model they're using, but it'd be cooler to be able to buy them.
EDIT: Still, if this becomes successful and they end up expanding their library (maybe adding TV shows, too), I'd like to see Steam become a competitor to Netflix.
Is this US only or something like that?
Is this US only or something like that?
"This item is currently unavailable in your region"
Maybe.
is this streamed or downloaded?
Im' going to be honest, I'm not sure I agree with this
I like the idea of steam expanding but, really, it should just stick to games, because it can't even do that all that great, as we've seen with steam greenlight.
They're focusing too much on expansion, and I understand why they are optimistic but... fix your fucking platform first dudes.

This is also something they've been toying with since like 2012 iirc
Remember when it was 2chums Zombie Movie years back and seemingly abandoned then brought up again for mad max now this?
I think I know what valves angle with this is, in SteamVR there is an app that lets you watch steam videos in a virtual movie theater, think of it like a gmod cinema server but for VR. They are expecting vive owners to rent movies from steam to create a virtual cinematic experience.
They'd rake in so much money if they allowed people to buy them for like $20 and had steam sales where they'd go for way less.
People would hoard movies like they hoard games
Steam just monopolizing everything, no one cares.
I don't really see the point with this pricing model. For eight bucks a month you have access to the entire Netflix catalog. Another few bucks will even upgrade the feed to 4K and let people stream four different things at once off your account; hell, get three friends to pitch in to share a premium-tier account (which is allowed by the ToS) and each person only pays a max of three dollars monthly for their own 4K stream - again, of anything on the service.
Four bucks to rent each movie for a mere two days is completely unattractive compared to that.
The hunger games are listed as well as all the Saw movies. Wow.
Now all steam needs is a way to purchase music and it's ready to take over the world.

They actually do that already for game soundtracks. Portal 2 includes its soundtrack as free DLC. A few other games have their soundtracks as paid DLC.
Movie rentals aren't really a good deal imo, especially when it comes to classics like a lot of what's listed in the OP. Like you can get Reservoir Dogs on blu-ray for $5 on Amazon.
I guess it's useful if you absolutely want to watch it right now.
This might be a good thing for people who have steam OS and wanted to pay for online media content.

I don't think you actually know what that word means lol
[editline]23rd April 2016[/editline]
the amount of people who cry "Monopoly" when it comes to steam amazes me
yeah sure I'd believe it if they bought out every other competitor on the entire market and tried to drive out the ones they couldn't buy out
Steam just monopolizing everything, no one cares.
You think steam has a monopoly holy heck.
Ever heard of Netflix? I heard they do movies also
Eh, the "rental" part turns me off. I mean, $4 isn't that bad for the model they're using, but it'd be cooler to be able to buy them.

Followed by the inevitable descent into Steam Movies Early Access and Steam Movies Greenlight where you'll get indie filmmakers selling thumbs ups in return for free copies of their movies that are basically compilations of stock movie assets and public domain films.

I can't wait until steam film green light is a thing so people can sell 3 hours of them taking a shit for 20$ and then people buy it "IRONICALLY"
[editline]23rd April 2016[/editline]
let me just hammer that word in
"IRONICALLY" buying a thing
Why have they got the redux? The original cut of Apocalypse Now is far better
Why have they got the redux? The original cut of Apocalypse Now is far better
nop.
i like more time to spend in my jungle movies.
alright lets be honest here when do movies get steam emotes and backgrounds. i want a twilight emote
by the way idiots, being the most popular thing isn't a monopoly, a monopoly is trying to ensure you're the only competitor
Dont a lot of the rentals cost more than just buying the DVD's on Amazon?
Dont a lot of the rentals cost more than just buying the DVD's on Amazon?
well there's about 20 copies of apocalypse now on amazon for 1p plus postage..
[editline]23rd April 2016[/editline]
all these rental things are so ridiculous. If I want to watch a movie once, why am I paying what is essentially a cinema ticket to see it...
