• Toy soldiers run afoul of school's weapons ban
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Christan Morales says her son just wanted to honor American troops when he made a hat decorated with an American flag and small plastic Army figures. But the hat ran afoul of the district's no-weapons policy because the toy soldiers were carrying tiny weapons. "His teacher called and said it wasn't appropriate because it had guns," Morales said. Morales' 8-year-old son, David, was assigned to make a hat for the day when his second-grade class would met their pen pals from another school. She and her son came up with an idea to add patriotic decorations to a camouflage hat. Earlier this week, the Tiogue School in Coventry sent the hat home with David after class. He wore a plain baseball cap on the day of the visit instead. Superintendent Kenneth R. Di Pietro said the principal told the family that the hat would be fine if David replaced the Army men holding weapons with ones that didn't have any. "The issue for us was, can it be done in a way that didn't violate the zero-tolerance for weapons?" he said. "Nothing was being done to limit patriotism, creativity, other than find an alternative to a weapon." Di Pietro said the district does not allow images of weapons or drugs on clothing. For example, it would not allow a student to wear a shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it. The principal "wasn't denying the patriotism," he said. "That just is the wrong and unfair image of one of our finest principals." Morales said her son was inspired to honor the military after striking up a friendship last summer with a neighbor in the Army. Banning the hat "sent the wrong message to the kids, because it wasn't in any way to cause any harm to anyone," she said. "You're talking about Army men. This wasn't about guns."
I hate zero tolerance policies. They make me foam at the mouth. Oh god. That was probably the longest facepalm ever.
Hey man, it's a slippery slope...
I'm more concerned about the fact their school makes them make hats
that's so fucking stupid. "Education through ignorance!"
Yes, tiny PVC weapons are really dangerous, and can incite violence, don't you know?
"I hate you, I'm gonna shoot you with this microscopic plastic pistol!"
What the fuck, that's completely fucking unreasona- SHIT!!! FUCKING RUN!!!
Schools like this make me sick.
What the fuck, that's completely fucking unreasona- SHIT!!! FUCKING RUN!!!
:ohdear: nostalgia...
This is why everyone loves to hate the US. Because these are the most popular news. I'm pretty sure exceptional good deeds hapen just as often, but none of them are as popular or controversial.
Hey guys we should ban pencils in schools, they're pointy. [editline]04:20PM[/editline] Funny thing is it makes more sense than banning these toys.
Nah, we should ban books. People can pick them up and hit others with them!
We are the Commando Elite.
I don't know guys, those little plastic bayonets on plastic soldiers are pretty sharp, they could be dangerous.
Nah, we should ban books. People can pick them up and hit others with them!
Or they could give people....ideas! :byodood:
Jesus, this is stupid. Zero tolerance policies make me angry.
Hey guys we should ban pencils in schools, they're pointy. [editline]04:20PM[/editline] Funny thing is it makes more sense than banning these toys.
I got in trouble for having fingernail clippers with me. The teacher said they were considered a weapon and took them (though to his credit, he agreed that was completely stupid, but he has to follow policy). I told him that if I wanted to hurt somebody, I would just use my wooden school issued stabbin' stick. I almost got in trouble (again).
I'm more concerned about the fact their school makes them make hats
They're 8, that's what 8 year olds do in school.
"Teacher, why is there a war?" "Johnny, shut up right now or I will send you right to the principles office!" "Why?" "War has guns in it!"
The world is becoming more of a pussy every day. Back in my elementary school, we would play war and have blood and guts strewn everywhere in our imaginations.
I'm pretty sure it's to discourage violence, and not because toy soldiers are a threat to students. Playing army and stuff kind of glorifies and romanticises war, or at least that's what it did to me when I was 6
The world is becoming more of a pussy every day. Conservative extremists are fucking us up, and super liberal pussies are fucking us up.
How do you Americans have easy gun ownership policies, but then go ballistic when suddenly kids are influenced by it?
wait 100% of history books have at least one picture of a gun also history has guns are they going to ban history?
Christan Morales
That's a very fitting name.
government=/=american people
Fair point
:ohdear: nostalgia...
Small Soldiers was the best movie EVER! :D
The world is simultaneously being fucked by extremists on both sides. Conservative extremists are fucking us up, and super liberal pussies are fucking us up.
It's not so much conservative extremists. Although I usually don't take sides in politics, allowing things to remain the way they were in the old days would be traditionalism. What I'd give to change the way the school board looks at discipline policies. It's just the fact that the world is moving in some sort of backwards "progressive" manner due to politically correct liberals, who support fascist doctrines such as zero tolerance policies. Hitler saw everything as black and white, no room for individual mercy, and apparently it's a wonderful idea to borrow from his system. The point is that shit like this is going to keep happening, and the punishments are going to become more and more harsh. It's a fucked up system we all live in, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Hey man, it's a slippery slope...
One second they are playing with army men the next they are fighting gang wars in the streets. /sarcasm
