According to city officials, all the locks blanketing the bridge will be taken off starting Monday (1 June). "This phenomenon generates two problems: a lasting degradation of the heritage of Paris and also a risk to the safety of visitors, Parisians and tourists," read a statement from the city council on Friday (29 May).
International Business Times The Huffington Post The Wall Street Journal
They're gonna need a lot of locksmiths, bolt-cutters and/or angle grinders.
It would be nice if they could replace it with something else. I went there back in November and it was wonderful to see all of the different countries and languages on all of the locks. I hope they build a new structure on land so lovers can put their padlocks on that instead without the risk of a bridge collapsing.
Didn't this already happen? I remember this story from multiple years ago. [editline]a[/editline] Or did it just take them this long to start to fix something that was going to cause a massive structure to come down and injure people, because I feel like that should've been done faster if that's the case.

Thats a shame. My friend put one on there before he and his family moved away from Paris after his dad died.
It's a shame, but it has to be done. Part of that same bridge's railing already collapsed a year ago because of all the heavy metal locks. People need to move this tradition to somewhere more controlled (though I suppose a lot of people would think that the 'magic' is ruined) or start a variation that doesn't involve heavy metal padlocks that both pose a threat to everyone else and are a huge pain in the ass to remove. For those who don't know, the reason people do this on bridges is because after you and your significant other close the lock, you throw the key into the river to signify that your love is eternal. Or something like that. It was all started by some Italian novel.
They're gonna need a lot of locksmiths, bolt-cutters and/or angle grinders.
guinness world record for amount of locks lockpicked in a row
They're gonna need a lot of locksmiths, bolt-cutters and/or angle grinders.
Pfft, one summer worker with a bolt-cutter is enough. Two if it seems to take too long.
I hope they follow on their threats to outlaw the whole love lock thing because it's costing them a ton of money to remove them and the risks at hand are a lot more important than the love of some inconsiderate idiots.
They're gonna need a lot of locksmiths, bolt-cutters and/or angle grinders.
Wouldn't it be easier to just replace the fence entirely? Move that thing somewhere nice where it won't be a problem.
Wouldn't it be easier to just replace the fence entirely? Move that thing somewhere nice where it won't be a problem.
put it in a museum
Nah, open relationship.
"Before we swing, we need to add your lock to ours. It's ok, it's a combination lock."
If it's so expensive don't remove them then.
The problem with letting them stay is the fact that the bridge gets too much weight. So much in fact, parts of it has already collapsed, and it's probably not far from collapsing all together. Locks are heavy (by design), and a few hundred thousands will quickly put the weight up in tons.
"This phenomenon generates two problems: a lasting degradation of the heritage of Paris and also a risk to the safety of visitors, Parisians and tourists," read a statement from the city council on Friday (29 May).
It degraded your heritage? What? It's part of the heritage.
There should be a lock-picking competition held at the bridge
They should take all the locks and make a giant metal heart statue out of them.
Those who purchased a lock should demand reparations from the French government.
Those who purchased a lock should demand reparations from the French government.
I think they should sue the french government in their divorce proceedings.
Thank god. I put a lock on there with my ex-girlfriend of a year and half and now I'll have the satisfaction of knowing that shit's gone.
They're gonna need a lot of locksmiths, bolt-cutters and/or angle grinders.
As a locksmith, I cringe at the amount of work this is going to take. Some of those locks your average boltcutters just won't deal with, and picking will take way too much time. To anglegrind them you have to individually hold each lock and cut it...agghghgh On the other hand, locksmiths make decent money- charging like $20 lock would be a pretty good payout :V

Oh, and you have to be careful to not damage the railing. Oh god [editline]31st May 2015[/editline]
They make electric and pneumatic bolt cutters.
Yeah, but a grinder with ~$5 blades is much cheaper than dulling out those jaws over hundreds of locks. Not to mention all of the other locks that are in the way of getting to the part you can actually cut.
Dremel is going to make a lot of money on little cutting wheels...
Those things shatter just by looking at them funny.
