Most of you have seen the thread in the News section about the depression of the more zealous fans of "Avatar" because they know that the universe created by the authors was purely fictional.
When I first saw it and read the news article, I laughed. But then I remembered other fictional works that had evoked a similar feeling in me.
Humanity in our time is in a state of rapid change - we are slowly shedding outdated, traditional ways of thinking and shifting into a new paradigm. We're more adventurous and we're starting to question society's old ideals. Conflict is constant, and it is inevitable. It's depressing to know just how petty, hateful, selfish and stubborn people can be, how little we can tolerate one another.
Enter Bioware's epic roleplaying game, Mass Effect.
Set in the far future, Humanity is in a golden age. we've discovered FTL - Faster Than Light - travel, and we've set out to explore the far reaches of the Milky Way and to colonize other planets. We've encountered other alien species and, after a long war, negotiated peace and eventually formed an alliance. Humanity has been introduced into a society in which different species of intelligent beings coexist peacefully and work together. Humanity in itself is now free from all forms of bigotry within its own species - and most importantly, religion is regarded as obsolete.
The idea was simple, but genius in its execution. It indeed does seem like a plausible reality in the far future, given that humanity ever gains the ability to efficiently explore space.
After I'd finished the game, I have to admit that I felt some small sense of longing. It wasn't the technology or the idea of space travel that attracted me, but simply the vision of humanity at its best - Human beings taking time to learn about that which we do not understand rather than blindly condemning it. Humanity living in peace with individuals of different beliefs and worldviews. And having a single government to represent all of humanity - no more petty nationalistic fervor, no more wars between nations over foolish political and religious ideologies. True equality.
Has anyone else here felt anything similar over any other work of fiction?
Playing through Fallout 3, I wished that it was real :c
I've always been fairly obsessed with post-apocalyptic environments, probably starting when I first read I Am Legend a while ago. I was thinking how awesome would it be to live in a version of California that had been ravaged by a mysterious illness that would only allow me to stay out in daylight, and I would have to cower in fear by night in a safe place. Then I read the Road and I was wishing I could be traveling the lands described in that book, avoiding capture by cannibals and sweeping every abandoned car, cabin, house, whatever for food and water to stay alive. Fallout 3 was the closest I think I'll ever get to living that, and even though a nuclear fallout would be the shittiest thing ever, I would still like to live in one, maybe one day when virtual reality has evolved to that point

Apart from the strange beauty of a post-apocalyptic world, I'm not sure I understand why, but it is a great story.
Mass Effect is pretty much Star Trek the Original Series.
Mass Effect is pretty much Star Trek the Original Series.
I'm afraid I don't know very much about Star Trek, but I have heard that it portrayed a very similar universe.
The Grand Tour series by Ben Bova was extremely impressive; I checked out every book of the series from the library and read them all over a few weeks. They're set in a near-future world where space travel/colonization is common and travelling to the moon for vacation is ordinary for rich folks. After I finished the series, I would be reading newspaper articles and things and just find myself going "Man Earth is getting kinda old, I should hop up to Selene City on the moon for vacation."
Then it would dawn on me that there is no Selene City and I would get really sad.
GRAND THEFT AUTO
- i always imagined slapping a bitch, killing a ho and knifing cops, earning my money on the streets by selling some good ass drugs. getting into a huge fight because a certain gang took over our bloc that we sold black market goods and drugs on and another fight because one of the opposing gang members started shit with our gang member and so we showed our pride and took up arms. when i had the chance to run over all the Asian people in that game because i didn't like em i was proud of what world that game was in.
but now i know and come to the realisation that we've discovered FTL - Faster Than Light - travel, and we've set out to explore the far reaches of the Milky Way and to colonize other planets. It's way past your bedtime, son.
You know, for once I'd like to get away from this stinking planet. Maybe take a trip to mars or another star system on a cruise.
But then I wake up and go to work.
When I was a kid, I used to wish Pokemon was real.
:(
Zelda. Life would be so much easier if we could spend our days killing monsters and find money by cutting grass.

Yes Billy off to sleep!! You have to wake up early tomorrow for your historectomy.
With Blade Runner I wish that I lived in that version of L.A. The cool blue and green neon lights everywhere, the lack of true isolation with the constant crowds of pedestrians, the flying spinners, the archaic and yet futuristic architecture of the newer buildings, the largely Asian influence and the dark beauty of the city alone made me want to live in that world. If only Vangelis' awesome soundtrack played everywhere I went there. And of course if Rachael was there too, that'd be a plus.
Brave Story by Miyuki Miyabe. Started reading it about a year or two ago after playing the PSP game, and stopped at 200 pages 'till the end (Book's about 1000 pages long)... I don't want it to end...
If you have a single literature-appreciative bone in your fucking body you'll read this book right now. Cover makes it look like a kids book, but it's actually pretty dark and deep. PSP game (Brave Story: New Traveler) was a damn good RPG, too.
I agree on Fallout. I wish I could make it more real.

lol im 19
As a method of getting to sleep, i imagine and create an alternate world in my mind, usually to write these ideas down the following morning.
i think of plantand animal species, and the geographic terrain they live on, the culture of these countries, they're history and architecture.
generally it's a world highly advanced in technology, there are 2 sentiment species, Humans and Octopi. the octopi are extremely hive-minded and live for the good of theyre species, not like humans who all want to be individuals ( as in, like here on earth). because of this the octopi are technologically lsuperior and developed safe fusion and other tech they gave to humans. a long history of speciesism on the human side (the octopi couldn't care less) but no war as the humans were afraid of the advanced tech, most of these confrontations as history .the total ratio of humans to octopi in the total population is 1 to 6, so there are much more humans than octopi.
though i have an itching hole in my imaginary world of my where i want to put another sentient species, one that has trouble and war with humans, leading to the massive demise in numbers and close-to-extinction in the history. but in the present day of open mindedness, free religion (or lack thereof, and freedom of speech, the undecided species struggle with public rights, feuds, bigotry and speciesism carrying in from they're history and the and the massive question and controversy on whenever humans and this species can legally marry (unlike the octopi, whose attitudes are absolute no-nonsense, and marrying a human would be a disgrace to it's hive-minded approach to life, and also note that humans and the undecided species cannot breed due to genetic differance)
though i have no idea on how the physical appearance of this species would look, it would have to be relative to us enough that the controversy of marriage and even the notion of it is plausable.
so yeah, i like to imagine stuffs.
lol im 19
I highly doubt that.

this.
about fallout 3
I play D&D a lot, and sometimes I wish it were all true. I wish I could be an adventurous rogue, going after treasure and fighting all kinds of danger.
:goleft:
The crappiest part of being human is that humans think being human sucks.
I suppose things wouldn't be getting any better if everyone was content, though.
Also, there's the possibility that faster-than-light travel will never come to fruition, so we'll always be alone in the universe, and we'll waste away in our solar system and eventually go extinct. That would be a bummer.
Warhammer 40k
The emperor is a bit of a tool real-
BLAM
Nerdrage has a pretty cool idea. Maybe he should write about it.
I sort of get the same thing with Stargate, but i'm not about to commit suicide because I can't bone Amanda Tapping.
After reading Lackadaisy I wish I'd lived in the 1920's and been a cool gangster :(
