I recently went to the job centre for a "Back to Work" session. There were seven others there and after a boring 30 minutes of the session, the more experienced job seekers in the group began to mention bad experiences they've had with the Job Centre and recruitment agencies. This got me to thinking: "What experiences does FP have to share?".
I only finished college last year and am still looking for my first job so I haven't had to sign on for long (therefore no horror stories so far).

Apart from an exploding water-reservoir, my experiences with job centres have been good.
I've only been in my local one once. But they were of no help whatsoever and their job database was outdated by a fair amount too. Some of the jobs they were offering had gone and some jobs being offered weren't in there.
I would try going there again, but there's a scary manlady security guard :v:

I forgot to mention, it was more man than woman, and not a good looking man either, a fat one with a mixture of moobs/ boobs. Ughhh.
If you stay unemployed at your age for 6 months you go onto something called 'New Deal' and my friend that is hard. Not only will you get depressed for being a failure for 6 months, you'll go to these 2 week courses full of chavs and drug-addicts about 'how to write a CV derp derp' and shit like that. You will get talked to like you're stupid and unmotivated, even if you aren't.
I got a job in the end and all was well but still, you'll feel like a fool if you stay on it too long. I ended up going back to college too and now I'm on my way to university in September.
Not really a story but just be wary you shouldn't rest on your laurels or you'll end up working full-time for free at a series of different shops (charity shops, TKmaxx, Iceland).
Good luck in finding a job!

lol iceland
I thankfully didn't have to go there. One my mates is working there now for free. He's a member on this forum :v:
I almost had a good job for me, at Currys mind you, problem is they didn't accept me, this was months ago and since then I've been sticking with a shoddy paper round just to buy lunch at college :frown: No luxuries until I get a half decent job.
Went in one once, queues out the door for the Jobseeker Allowance people. Obviously this was the staffs priority, because anyone who isn't a dobber must know what they're doing.
Now I just use the site, which is almost as bad.
just leech of the g man like every fat chav does
Is this a British thing? Around here in the US, employment agencies are thinly disguised scams.

Wait... are you implying I'm a fat chav?

I think I just pooped a little. :sigh:
I went to the Job Centre once. I found them largely unhelpful and I felt I was treated like someone who didn't want to work. I appreciate that many people who use the Job Centre are unemployed because they choose to be and the JCP staff must become cynical when so many people tell them they've been trying their best to find a job, but I hate being tarred with the same brush as those lazy people who are lying to get benefits.
I didn't go back, soon managed to find a job by myself with my local council's Environmental Health department, one which I've been doing for two years now. :v:

no no no
Well, there was that time when I did 10 hours work one week, and when I declared it (Legal requirement) as a one off payment, they said they would ignore the first 5 hours, and deduct the second 5 hours from my benefit, a total of about £38 deducted from that weeks payment. And as I worked under 16 hours a week I would still be legally considered unemployed.
But they actually stopped 2 months benefit (£404) I had to live for 2 months struggling on the £80 odd I earned that week. Which is just impossible, and I had to borrow lots of monies from people. After numerous phone calls I've been reinstated, but as of yet they haven't backdated and given me the money I am entitled to.
Which makes me think, if they reacted like that, what are they going to do when I next sign on and declare the £250 I earned over the Christmas period, probably kick me off the dole all together.
Got laid-off, went to register for unemployment, was told I could do my weekly certifications online, all seemed well.
Come to find out 4 weeks later that I've not been getting paid because the certification system they use is a flaming pile of shit and wasn't registering my certifications, so while it says I was PAID I clearly was NOT.

The government really don't want to give away their monies. It does seem like the job centre will try and screw you over any chance they get so they don't have to deal with you anymore.
