The Let's Play repository of camcorders and save states
9 replies, posted
Let's Play is a fickle bitch. In that regard, I felt it to be in good taste to have a Let's Play awareness thread. for notable LP's, LP'ers, and more! The most fun you can have without having to spend 10 dollars!
Let's Play? what's that?
To let's play a game, or "LP" it, is to play through a game for the internet. Whether it be funny, informative, alone, or even with a posse, there are different ways to accomplish this.
The video let's play!
VLP's are arguably the most popular. Be it from a camcorder made in the Regan administration or your 3k capture card, it is the act of capturing your gameplay on video, adding text or vocal commentary (whether it be live, or in post) and uploading it on Youtube to get money. See below for notable examples!
The Screenshot let's play!
Screenshot LP's are, of course, a series of screenshots detailing the action in-game. While this is most useful in older games such as Maniac Mansion where there isn't much to be added with video, there are a few exceptions. My personal favorite type of Screenshot LP's are the ones that narrate the action, or accompany the LP'er in some way. See below for notable examples!
The Hybrid let's play!
A hybrid LP is that which blurs the line between good and evil, and uses both video and screenshots to get their point across.
But Hoboiam, the only LP I know about is The Slim Shady LP!
No, young suburbanite, this is not the thread for that. if you are unaware of where to find good LP's, check the Let's Play Archive!
That takes too long, and I am a goldfish! I can't pay attent
Here are a few of my favorite let's plays, and some info about them and their players.

Notable Video LP's
SONIC by Cybershell
Cybershell is funny as hell. This series takes you from sonic 1-3, as he talks about snapple, ritz crackers, and sonic history. His video production is well above average, and I highly recommend checking him out.

The grandfathers of VLP come to bring you Jack Slate's adventures through construction yards, prison yards, and grave yards. They shoot a lot of shit, and have a lot of social commentary. More on these two below.
---
Notable LP crews
The Giant Bomb Crew.
If you're unaware of Giant Bomb's existence, I feel bad for you. It's by far the best video game website on the net, and it's run by genuinely funny people.

Pokecapn and the Funky Bunch
Pokecapn and friends are known to get together, eat shitty food, and play games all in one sitting. Most of the commentary is just them talking shit and not even caring. You can tell these guys are all friends, and that chemistry is what makes them fun to watch.

More of the same. If you didn't like the others, you won't like this one.

Mario Party 1-8
They play Wario Party, where they turn off the rules and their stars roll over to the next game, making it the biggest party ever held as confirmed by me.

If you are to take a look at only one LP from this thread, I'd make it this one. It's the Breaking Bad of LP's. I don't know what that means.

Slowbeef and Diabetus
Slowbeef is the mod of the LP subforum over at Something Awful. He's credited for doing the first VLP, with The Immortal kickstarting all those camcorder LP's you see on youtube. Him and his good pal Diabetus went on to do quite a few LP's including the Metroid Prime trilogy, and circa 2008 created a youtube account dedicated to fixing YOUR shitty LP's. That channel? Retsupurae.
They do more than just assault youtube superstars, though. They also do Wrongupuraes, where they comment over a the length of a full game, (An lp without the gameplay experience!) they comment over shitty flash games (and movies!) and they also sometimes watch terrible cartoons for your entertainment!
My favorite thing they've ever done is by far the Darkseed 2 Wrongupurae. It's amazing how they seem to keep things fresh over the ENTIRE game.
Darkseed 2
There's too many good Retsupuraes to post, though, so I'll let you go through them yourself.
I'm not the spokesperson of LP or anything, and I'm not claiming to know everything, so if you feel there's anything I should add to the OP, feel free and send me a message. Otherwise, feel free to post some LP'ers you feel deserve recognition!
I approve this thread, we really need it.
severe lack of two best friends play
http://www.youtube.com/user/thesw1tcher
This thread has a massive lack of ProtonJonSA.
Also camcorder LP's are terrible. You're thinking of those that use screencapture devices. (The ones that allow you to record directly from the TV as you play via console)

Also camcorder LP's are terrible.
That's why I mention them :v:
Nondrick's non adventure is my favorite screenshot LP ever. The original site doesn't load the pictures but this one does.
http://www.screencuisine.net/livinginoblivion/nondricks-non-adventure/fresh-off-the-boat-anvil/
My favorite LPers:
1) http://www.youtube.com/user/Nagidal146
2) http://www.youtube.com/user/gixG17
3) http://www.youtube.com/user/mynameisnotlilly
Nagidal is a great guy, I had tons of fun playing with him on Minecraft, he had some really good project ideas and put the time and effort in to build what he envisioned. Also what's nice about his channel is that he has been uploading video logs (cleverly named 'Nagilogs'), and recently he made a big move and got a job working with Volkswagen, but still stays loyal to his viewers and puts out new content regularly. Mynameisnotlilly on the other hand took a break to get his life straightened out again, but he also recently found a new job so things are looking good for him. He does a lot of classic games like Baldur's Gate and the classic Fallout games.
The hidden gems on YouTube.
I liked watching Chuggaaconroy back before he got really popular. Then he started being super wacky lol crazy zany energetic, and he got annoying.
Freelance Astronauts: http://www.freelanceastronauts.com/
and Pokecapn [and the crew]: http://www.youtube.com/user/pokecapn
Are both amazing channels. ALSO Don't forget Hamst3r!
I love RunButton, I'm pretty sure they go to SA. Their Silent Hill LPs are fantastic and is my favorite LP of theirs, and they're currently in the middle of doing SH2. They're doing Binary Domain as well too, and they were doing something called 20 years of Sonic recently (which they finished up), I think it was them basically playing ALL the Sonic games. The chemistry between the two of them is just...too good to be true. I love to be cozy at night and just watch them.
Another good gang of LPers was Tipping Forties, sadly they are dead now. Still not sure of the reason why they stopped. Sucks though, they were really fantastic. They're all fucking hilarious and all their LPs are great. My favorite one of theirs has to be LBP2 though, I've not had such a gut busting time watching an LP in a long time.
This thread has a massive lack of ProtonJonSA.
Sucks though that Jon is dead a hella lot of the time. I miss him doing Mario romhacks...
I liked watching Chuggaaconroy back before he got really popular. Then he started being super wacky lol crazy zany energetic, and he got annoying.
Freelance Astronauts: http://www.freelanceastronauts.com/
If there's any LP I'll always come back to, it's Chuggaa's Pikmin LPs. I love the Pikmin series and those LPs were back in the days of his prime (at least in my opinion.) I hope he plays Pikmin 3 when it comes out for WiiU.
And is there any reasoning behind the Freelance Astronauts being dead? They're a great group, but they haven't done shit in a long time, the last videos upload to their youtube was some Cargo game a ton of months ago, and they've been "playing" Crysis forever.
Oh! Another LP I liked was Stuntman and Stuntman Ignition by Tyrant Sabre. It's hilarious to see how bad that game was. Good concept, badly executed. Only the first Stuntman is on the lparchive, don't know why Ignition isn't on there. Maybe he hasn't finished it yet? I could have sworn he did though. I can't view the original thread to see if he did or not, I think he kept both games to one thread.
http://lparchive.org/Stuntman/
If you're a Banjo Kazooie series lover like me, then a must watch LP is both games by Rooreelooo. Not only does he provide entertaining commentary, but he also provides background information and secrets that even I didn't know, and I've played through the games more times than I can count.
http://lparchive.org/Banjo-Kazooie/
If you've not had the chance to play Dead Space (like me up until the past Steam Halloween sale), a good LP is the one by The Man With a Hat. He plays it on the hardest mode, shows what would have happened if he had fucked up, and posts trivia, behind the scenes details, concept art and text logs and that kind of shit in his posts.
http://lparchive.org/Dead-Space/
I for one have always wanted to see what would happen if Mario were to be on drugs and also a cat, luckily taxidemistpasta provided this experience for us without the torture of actually having to go through it in his playthrough of dongs.exe! The game is pretty abusive of the player and hilarious at the same time, sadly the videos are very small and not the best quality and you can't actually fullscreen, but you can still zoom in on the browser though.
http://lparchive.org/dongs-exe/
Deceased Crab has to be one of the most memorable LPers for me, and my favorite LP of his is La-Mulana. Such a good game and such a good LPer, where can you go wrong? (You should also probably check out his other LPs somewhere)
http://lparchive.org/La-Mulana/
I just discovered these guys, helloitsdan & lithuanian dad, recently because of an LP thread on /v/, and I must say, they're pretty great. I've only had the chance to watch their Mercenaries 2 playthrough, but I'm making sure to watch their other LPs in the future. Though the game itself was a letdown, they manage to make it entertaining and a great experience for the viewer. Just like Running Button, the chemistry between the two of them is great. You thought that Robbaz was the king of Sweden and Vikings? They pretty much prove that Mattias Nilsson is the true winner in that area.
http://lparchive.org/Mercenaries-2/
I know Freelance Astronauts have been mentioned already, but I just wanted to highlight two of their LPs: Seaman and RPing Star Trek. Their Seaman LP has to be, well, shit, it might as well be a comedy riot. The game itself is a silly concept and wacky shit happens 24/7. I wish I could get it myself to play it on my Dreamcast just because of their LP. The RPing Star Trek is them going into a badly made RP game of Star Trek on some old Star Trek engine, and just basically dicking around instead of actually RPing. They make an absolute mess of the Enterprise and I'm pretty sure Captain Kirk would not be amused if he was there. George Takei gives it two "Oh my"s up.
