A Fort Lauderdale woman booked into the Naples jail last week caused a stir when she distributed pills to inmates, sending one woman to the hospital for a possible overdose and another to the jail clinic, according to reports.
Rhonda Sue Tomlin, 43, smuggled a combined 10 grams of Xanax and Oxycodone pills into a day room of the Naples Jail Center, deputies reported. They say the drugs were kept in a plastic bag hidden inside her pussy.
Six inmates accepted pills, swapping commissary items such as clothing and food in exchange, the report said.
Jail administrators say they are now considering buying body scanning devices to prevent future smuggling.
Tomlin was first arrested last Friday after a Florida Highway trooper stopped to help her and three other women stranded at mile marker 70 on Alligator Alley.
Advised that the car matched that of a robbery suspect, the trooper asked the women for their names. Tomlin gave a fake name, was discovered and was then found to have six outstanding warrants from Broward County. The charges included probation violation, battery and driving on a suspended license.
She was booked into the Naples Jail Center the same night and placed in a day room, an enclosed space in which cells open to a lobby area with tables.
Around 4:40 a.m. the next morning, an inmate told deputies that Tomlin was handing out pills. The officers strip searched Tomlin and discovered the plastic bag.
They performed a shakedown in the day room, finding several pills and discovering that six inmates ingested the drugs. One admitted to taking five pills and was sent to the clinic with slurred speech.
Another was rushed to Naples Community Hospital after she vomited and passed out. Fellow inmates said the woman took several pills. She recovered and was returned to the jail.
Deputies charged Tomlin on two felony counts of opiate drug possession and a felony count of smuggling contraband into a jail. The women who took the pills were disciplined in the jail.
Had Tomlin first been arrested on drug charges, she might have been discovered earlier. Jail policy requires that all inmates booked on drug charges be strip searched. Tomlin was originally booked on the warrants and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.
Jailers are now considering buying a body scanning device similar to scan more inmates more thoroughly. The device, similar to those used in some airports, would have revealed the pills in Tomlin’s case, according to a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.[/release]
