Harry Potter? Come on, even if it's for kids, the world that Rowling crafted was pretty amazing--ingenious in what she managed to pull together, at the least.

I'm gonna be picky and tell you that none of those books were originally written in english.
It's real hard to nominate just one book to be the greatest, as I see it there's no book today that transcends all the genres and still manages to be a great read. Although here's my list:

[b]Horror:[/b] Now, I can't remember reading that many horror books, but so far I'd say "Who Goes There?" scores pretty high.
It turned out pretty short as I left most of the sci-fi out. :v:
