• Not in my backyard: Small towns across the US protest surge of immigrant kids
Washington (CNN) -- In places such as Murrieta, California, and Oracle, Arizona, the message is clear: Thousands of immigrant children fleeing Central America are unwelcome in Small Town U.S.A. The children, many of them unaccompanied from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, have traveled up to 3,000 miles across deserts and rivers, clinging to the tops of trains. They sometimes face rape and beatings at the hands of "coyotes," smugglers paid thousands of dollars to sneak them across the southern border with Mexico. Earlier this month in Murrieta, busloads of babies in their mothers' laps, teens, 'tweens and toddlers were turned back from a detainee facility. They were met by screaming protesters waving and wearing American flags and bearing signs that read such things as "Return to Sender." And so it goes. Southwest border towns, West Coast suburbs, and middle American enclaves have become the newest battleground in the vitriolic political debate over immigration. The showdowns highlight the scope and depth of challenges the Obama administration grapples with as officials try to use immigration-related fixes to resolve what politicians on both sides of the aisle have called "a humanitarian crisis."
http://www.cnn.com/2014/07/15/politics/immigration-not-in-my-backyard/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
people really need to go back to history class and learn what the inscription on the statue of liberty says
people really need to go back to history class and learn what the inscription on the statue of liberty says
That wasn't talking about brown people, silly.
people really need to go back to history class and learn what the inscription on the statue of liberty says
when it comes to values that the USA was founded on the only one that actually matters is the right to bear arms alright
here we only celebrate American things, like the Statue of Liberty, fireworks, and Anglo-Saxon Protestantism
people really need to go back to history class and learn what the inscription on the statue of liberty says
While I agree with the sentiment, those coming through Ellis Island did so in a controlled, imaginable, and legal manner. Same from Angel Island in California. However, even back in the 1800's we had the "Yellow Peril" when the government halted immigration from China when it was deemed to be too many coming over. Whether or not it was completely racist (it was discriminatory based on ethnicity), it did set a precedence for stricter immigration control. Basically, there is a difference from boatloads of people that have crew manifests and a funneling checkpoint where everyone is precessed, and unchecked numbers coming over 24/7.
I think it should be up to the native American Indians to decide who stays.
I think it should be up to the native American Indians to decide who stays.
Will this apply only to the United States, or to the rest of the Americas as well? This argument is so stupid.
Will this apply only to the United States, or to the rest of the Americas as well? This argument is so stupid.
careful, you might be voted out
The US should just annex Mexico and Central America. Am I kidding? Maybe.
If those kids have two functioning brain cells, they won't want anything to do with small town America.
It's interesting that people rally to the defense of the immigrants when this happens in the United States, but if something like this were to happen in, say, Italy, most people would turn the other way or even outright support the protesters.
I think it should be up to the native American Indians to decide who stays.
I feel uneasy letting the definition of alcoholism and morbid obesity dictate who stays in the country or not. They should look in the mirror. I guarantee, unless they're of English ancestry, that these peoples families faced discrimination when immigrating here however long ago with the exact same bullshit justifications.
man fuck these kids

In early US history, it was those god-damned Germans. Then it was those god-damned Catholics. Then it was those god-damned blacks. And the hegemony gradually dissolves and dilutes. The tribe walls up against whoever is a readily available threat, and the border and racial lines are pretty much the only ones viable. People want to blame a group for their problems. They want to blame a group for businesses leaving their small towns. They want to blame a group of outsiders for crime so the community doesn't dissolve because introspection is a hard process.
I think it should be up to the native American Indians to decide who stays.
I think they don't have a say because this isn't the pre-1600's anymore and the land isn't theirs to rule. Or should Rome(so basically Italy) have all the say in what happens in France? I mean, historically, France was part of Roman Gaul so, technically the land is theirs to rule right? My point being, historic ownership has no bearing on anything.

[editline]16th July 2014[/editline] Because that's what they're doing lol

I thought a large portion of Americans were ethnically German.
They were met by screaming protesters waving and wearing American flags and bearing signs that read such things as "Return to Sender."
Nothing quite says freedom like dehumanizing your fellow man, am I right?

This is for tax reasons and to cover the business from getting fucked by the government about employing slave labour) and get virtually none of the tax-paid benefits from the system. Thanks but try again.

I don't think I've ever heard of not paying illegals cash, I'll look into it after work.
The saddest part of this is we'll probably not fix the actual cause of why people risk coming in illegally in the first place.

But I'm Irish and my family has been here for longer so it's OK, right? Actually 100 years ago they'd say the same about me.

I don't think I've ever heard of not paying illegals cash, I'll look into it after work.
It's common for larger businesses, smaller ones can get away with cash and nothing else because of the lack of government monitoring and having to explain where a few hundred dollars went (as compared to how a large business operating with illegal labour would have thousands of dollars simply disappear this way). A lot of large businesses that employ them will have a pool of dead people's SSN's which they use to employ said dead person on payroll, they are paid a wage, this wage is cut down to the money given to the illegal worker, the rest being pocketed by the company, or the person's hours are set at some really low amount that isn't actually true to what the immigrant worked, such as a 20-hour part time wage yet they worked 60 hours or more, and they get the full check from the pay period. Of course this is thus taxed by being a "legal job" and because of that, illegal immigrants technically pay taxes. I don't quite know all the in-working of how they get away with this sort of shit, from my understanding there is some set of loopholes in the IRS that allows for w-2's to be submitted without matching SSN's or some garbage like that.
