LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Yesterday's LAPD gun buyback was so successful that two-hour waits and gift-card shortages were reported.
The department says it picked up 75 assault weapons as part of its no-questions-asked effort that saw $100 dollar cards handed out for handguns and long guns and $200 for the kind of rifle used in the Newtown tragedy. The LAPD says 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns will also be destroyed.
Good stats. But this is the one that gut us saying WTF:
Cops picked up two -- count 'em two -- rocket launchers (!) (and not one, as other outlets are reporting), an LAPD official with close knowledge of the program told us. Holy hell why do people on our streets have military grade rocket launchers?

The official told us this is not that unusual, that "we've had them in the past."
He says that police believe the "shoulder-fired" weapons are antiquated, decades-old, launchers from wars past often picked up by collectors or passed down to family members by veterans.

The official described them as LAW weapons, for light-anti-tank weapons.
They propel rocket grenades, but the official called them "non-working" because they did not have the "projectiles" with them. Thank God!?
Asked if they could arouse terror concerns among FBI and Homeland Security officials, the lawman told us that the LAPD had received no inquiries and that the department would, in any case, honor its no-questions-asked commitment to keep the donors anonymous.

**Fixed the title, realized the other launcher is an M72 LAW.
how the fuck do you even get an at-4 rocket launcher
how the fuck do you even get an at-4 rocket launcher
Carefully.
how the fuck do you even get an at-4 rocket launcher
The internet? v:v:v
Not a big deal. They're empty, useless tubes. The only way you could possibly be harmed with one is if someone decided to bludgeon you with it.
$200 for the kind of rifle used in the Newtown tragedy.
Didn't he leave it in the car and it never fired a shot?
how the fuck do you even get an at-4 rocket launcher
They are empty and are one time use weapons.
It is a fancy tube that they just got the cops to fork over 100 bucks for.
hell id keep it just for a mantelpiece
This is fucking sensationalist as hell
Rocket launchers like the AT-4 and the M72 are single shot, so the fired and empty tubes are sold to collectors and such as harmless props.
Its about as harmful as a fucking 2x4
Holy hell why do people on our streets have military grade rocket launchers?
As opposed to non-military grade rocket launchers.
I can not believe they are just gonna destroy them. All of the weapons just kinda wasted.

the fact that people are selling ones that have yet to be used/discharged is what's concerning dude
I can not believe they are just gonna destroy them. All of the weapons just kinda wasted.
yeah, excess military goods that we don't need being broken down and recycled, what a disaster
$100 for handguns and longuns
$200 for the kind of rifle used in the newtown tragedy. Wow.
I thought a rifle wasn't even fired in Newtown, just pistols.
It's cringeworthy how much those things sold for knowing it's a seller's market right now.
I'd be scared to turn it in. Good to see they're honoring the no questions asked code, will almost definitely encourage more people to do the same thing.
Didn't he leave it in the car and it never fired a shot?
It depends on the story. That was what was originally reported. Its all kind of fishy and convoluted.
the fact that people are selling ones that have yet to be used/discharged is what's concerning dude
Both had been fired, where are you seeing that they had un-fired ones?
I love how they have the rifles set on the table in a way to where we can't see if they're automatics or not.
Both had been fired, where are you seeing that they had un-fired ones?
i'm not referring to the ones in this article in specific
$100 for handguns and longuns

It was a .233 caliber bushmaster AR-15. Same weapon that the guy used to shoot at the firefighters.
One of the guns on the table looks like an M1 Garand. How sad. :(
I love how they have the rifles set on the table in a way to where we can't see if they're automatics or not.
Doesn't really matter anymore.
i'm not referring to the ones in this article in specific
Then which ones are you referring to? I've yet to hear of a single un-used missile or rocket launcher entering the civilian population.
One of the guns on the table looks like an M1 Garand. How sad. :(
Yeah. I don't understand why they destroy them, at least the ones worth something or with historical value.
Man who wrote this article?
Doesn't really matter anymore.
Chances are, a good majority of those weapons are perfectly legal rifles, they're probably being given away because they were handed down to people who don't care about them. From looking at the stocks on several of those AK's, they look like old Norinco sporter AK's, a perfectly legal semi auto. what a waste
Fuck, I would have paid $400 cash to someone turning in one of those AKs.
One of the guns on the table looks like an M1 Garand. How sad. :(
Yea, it does look like a M1 Garand. I would buy that from them.
The LAPD says 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns will also be destroyed.
:downs:
Here come the self-proclaimed gun experts who have never touched a gun in their life.
Yeah. I don't understand why they destroy them, at least the ones worth something or with historical value.
because its all about politics?
do u think they care about how much a and b is worth or how really rad c and d are?? its all about some dude shooting kids and riding the wave it made. the ' rifle used in newtown ' comment made it really obvious
