A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has hit the Pacific Ocean 159 kilometres off the coast of Japan, prompting tsunami warnings, the United States Geological Survey reports/
The quake hit at 5:51 a.m. local time near Makurazaki in the country’s extreme southwest, about 1,400 kilometres from Tokyo. Tsunami warnings stretch along the country’s south west, including the Tanegashima Yakushima region, which experienced a small tsunami in 2011.
"Based on earthquake information and historic tsunami records, the earthquake was not sufficient to generate a tsunami," the warning center said Friday.
From the OP:
A 30-centimter (one foot) tsunami was recorded at 6:45 a.m. on Nakanoshima, a small island to the south of Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island.
Move along.
Jesus Christ. First France now Japan.
today just sucks.
The fuck is even happening anymore?

Friday the 13th
It was apparently revised down to 6.5. They've dealt with much bigger in the past, and the tsunami looks to have been pretty minor.
Can this year, hell, day get any worse, at all?
Holy shit thats near me. Was wondering why mine and my wifes phones went apeshit at 6am.

Basically says earthquake is occuring of the coast of Kagoshima prefecture (the southern tip of Kyushu about 250km south of me) and to be aware when it arrives here.
Well that's what life is like living above a subduction zone
This is just ridiculous at this point, god damn. What a terrible day.

Japan's warning system is pretty damn cool. Good to see though that the US is trying to get something of their own set up eventually in California.

I find this amazing, I remember watching a video from the 2011 earthquake where a guys computer/TV came on and started counting down to when the quake was going to hit him.
Apparently it's tiny right? 1Ft or so?
Friday the 13th
Is everyone just going to start getting extremely superstitious now because this shit just happened to happen Friday the 13th?

Then how come the article says it started 5:51 a.m.
[editline]14th November 2015[/editline]
You do realize Japan is in UTC+09:00, right?
People were going apeshit over this, saying stuff like the nuclear power plant near where the earthquake happened will go bad or something like that. Come on now, this isn't Fukushima.

Woops, wrong thread.
Wait we had an earthquake today?
So that's why my friend was trying to call me.
Luckily Tokyo is on the other side
I remember working in the Hospital one time around 3 am and it's just me and my nurse. Suddenly the entire Hospital starts shaking and we just look at each other dumbfounded until it stops. Turns out it was a 6. Something quake, the most damage was a clock fell off the wall. Moral of the story is that every Quake in Japan isn't breaking news, happens all the time.
