I'm going to get the faded maple top chrome hardware LP studio, but I wonder how good the shreddability is. Can it play things like the Crazy Train solo, black tide, and joe satriani? I know its not an Ibanez or anything, but is the neck "fast"?
Just use the damn guitar thread...
And In my experience, fast playing isn't much easier on a thin neck. I primarily play on a Les Paul, and when I try out an Ibanez or something I can't play faster at all.
you can do anything on any guitar (excluding things requiring a tremolo on a fixed-bridge guitar and things requiring more than 6 strings on a 6 string, of course)
it's not the guitar that defines what you can and can't do, it's the player

this.
i've been trying to say no guitar is inherently better then another style of guitar (build quality aside) but no one believes me.
That being said, I've seen more Les Pauls/les paul copies in hardcore then any other guitar.

Anyone who says a certain guitar can't be used for a genre of music is fucking retarded and deserves to be stabbed.
also, this band gets some serious tone out of a epiphone LP. (look at the headstock)
It's much more dependent on whether YOU can play faster on a thicker neck or not. I play like shit on Ibanez because the necks are way too thin for me and give me cramps, but on my PRS which has a thick neck I'm a much more competent player because it suits my hand and my style.
Also, I'd just not recommend a Gibson since from memory you'd be shipping one into the country with no way to try beforehand, and Gibson are nothing if not inconsistent. I've seen SG Standards where I could fit my thumbnail between the binding and the neck, yet played one for the exact same price that was incredible
I use a yamaha AES620hb currently and its neck radius is 350mm. I think the normal neck is 400mm?
Personally judging by the guitar you have right now, I don't think the Gibson would be a massive departure neck wise, so if you find that comfortable then the Gibson should be too. I stand by my advice regarding Gibson's inconsistency though, there's a good chance ordering blind that you'll end up with an objectively worse guitar than your Yamaha. So if you like Gibson style necks, I'd recommend looking into Schecter. They have pretty chunky necks and are pretty consistent in their quality

Yes, Gibson's are fucking horrible for consistency. You can get lucky and get a guitar that plays like a million dollars or get one that plays like a unsetup strat copy.
IMO, Epiphone. I cannot stand by Epiphone enough. They have awesome quality control and are very very consistent.

They are good guitars, don't let this problem stop you, play one in a store and buy the one you played.

So if I order a les paul studio from Musician's friend, what are the chances that its a dud?

Just as high as ordering anywhere else. You'd really have to try the particular guitar you want to buy to see if you want it or not. Nothing else will tell you if it's a bad guitar or not.

Just go to your local shop, chances are, they will have 5-6 of them.
Personally I'd go for something with better access to the higher frets, maybe a 24 fret just for easier access to the other 22. Also personally, I would look for a neck that isn't lacquered. My fingers slide better over a smooth bare wood neck than they do on a neck finished like the rest of the guitar.

Surprisingly easy job to mask off the section of the neck your hand sits on and take some fine steel wool to it to reduce the finish to matte, if that was the only dealbreaker on an otherwise perfect guitar
I ordered the Jackson SL3 Soloist. I'm not able to try out any guitars, so I didn't bet on the les paul.
