TV history has been made.
The Simpsons has been renewed for Season 29 and Season 30, an unprecedented feat, becoming the longest-running scripted TV show of all time.
With the double renewal, the animated sitcom will hit 669 episodes during its 30th season, breaking the record for most episodes of any scripted show, among both animated and live-action series. Previously, that record was held by Gunsmoke, the Western drama that aired from 1955 to 1975, hitting 635 episodes.
Can't wait to see what new outdated pop culture references and attempts to emulate Family Guy the Simpsons'll get next.
If we're lucky maybe they'll just go back to rehashing old episode concepts again.
I think the title card for the Futurama cross over episode put it into better words than I could.

Simpsons is so weird to watch now. It feels totally different to the show I grew up watching. Less "heart" and more focus on comedy.
I guess that's why it's made it this far though. Way to go simpsons, I guess.
I almost wish that the Simpsons adopted an ATHF format where continuity is completely thrown out the window for the sake of hijinks.
For those of you keeping score at home, at the end of the 30th season, assuming it would take place in 2019, it would have Bart being born in 2009, Lisa in 2011, and Maggie born two years from now.
I think they could come up with more ideas if they let the family start aging. I want to see Bart and Lisa in highschool with Maggie going through Kindergarten / Grade School.

Fill me in, why are we assuming it would take place in 2019?
theyve been scraping the bottom of the barrel for so long theyve dug right down to the fuckin dinosaur bones
They'll probably end it after the 30th. It's the only logical place at this point
He'll yeah I've been waiting for this forever

It's one season a year. Season 28 will finish in 2017, 29 will run 2017-2018, 30 will run 2018-2019, thus finishing in 2019.
There's a solid chance this show will outlive me for fuck's sake
THEY'LL WILL NEVER STOP THE SIMPSONS

Fucking shit man. I've not watched a new episode of the Simpsons in forever but the fact that it's still been going on this entire time is pretty nuts.

Y'know I don't actually know anyone who does catch new episodes of the Simpsons
still even if nobody watched their episodes the merchandise sales alone could probably sustain another 12 seasons
Rick and Morty is the future, you had a good run Simpsons.
There's people who still watch The Simpsons? geez.

Is it so much to ask to kill the Simpsons and bring back Futurama?!

I mean, they did bring back Futurama. And it wasn't as good as it used to be. Better that it stay dead.

Ooh, thanks. I got a bit mixed up. I thought the show literally took place a year or two in the future, rather than perpetually existing in the year the season's in.

Nooo, no. Futurama arguably died gracefully, I'd like it to stay that way, and be remembered fondly.
can we just have a new MattG show and end the fucking god damn simpies
After the third ten year anniversary, I'd say it's time to bring The Simpsons to a close. It's a historic part of America's (and plenty other places') popular culture and it'll be remembered as such, but the show quit being fun to watch multiple seasons ago.

I'd say maybe do another movie or two at most. Movies can be a lot more free in the writing and you've got a lot longer to work on them. The Simpsons Movie was pretty good imo even though I hardly watched the show at the time.
Fox doesn't give a shit about the show's image and the irreplaceable staff (main VAs) are being paid too much to leave, they're going to keep making the show until it stops making money :v:
Would be really neat to see something along the lines of a Durians crossover in which it's revealed that each Simpsons episode was a look into a different dimension of the multiverse, this explaining the no aging and opening the series up to new ideas that aren't bound by continuity. But optimistic, I know, but at this point what else is going to happen, save more unfunny rehashed jokes?
Stopped being funny after 2002.
The Simpsons were better when the humor was natural, the pop culture and news references were subtle, older, in many cases classic TV was parodied and the celebrity cameo was usually short.
Now we are beaten over the head with in cases dated references while entire episodes center on whichever celebrity is "in". And the anthology episodes are just whatever garbage is in theaters, but with The Simpsons!.......

I feel like a lot more of the comedy in earlier episodes of The Simpsons (and also Futurama) was implied humour, and had more layers to it, whereas now I feel like a lot of it is shoved in your face. Especially when it was more risqué humour. Like in the past you had to think about it slightly (even if it was only slightly) whereas now you're just told what the joke is, kind of like "Hey, look at this. This is funny? Do you get it? It's funny!"
While it's somewhat comparing apples and oranges, take the implied 'dirty' humour from this older Futurama episode,

and compare it to this episode of the Simpsons (which, by Simpsons entire run length is actually a 'middle aged' episode now and not even particularly recent) in which Homer blurts out that he masturbates all of the time,

This scene always comes to mind whenever a new Series is announced:
